3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Poured a deep black color ale with nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma of rich black chocolate with light residual sugar notes. Taste is also a great mix between some rich black chocolate with light roasted notes. Body is bit thin for style with great carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed with great drinkability factor.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2007 My Bottom Line:
This Baltic Porter’s molasses and roastiness dwell in a rich body ably cut by a hoppy and earthy finish. A well-balanced number which worked a little better for me than their Oak-Aged version.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam dissipates into the browned blackness.
-Carbonation is comfortable, working efficiently with the nourishing body.
-Earthiness is found in the nose and amongst the drying roastiness as well.
-Almost a year into its existence, I can say this beer ages very gracefully.
-Another thing which is fun with this brewery is that their Baltic Porter and Imperial Stout are very different from each other. These guys are really having fun.
On tap at the Mondial de la Bière and at the brewery tasting room.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Opaque, dark with reddish hue, one finger’s head with much lace. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Flavor similar to aroma with notes of caramelized malts and hops (fuggles). Pronounced alcohol but well balanced with the strong flavors. Afertaste is sweet with bitter notes. Too bad this one cannot be purchased bottled for taking home!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2008-05-31. Black body with a nice foamy khaki head. Aroma is surprisingly subtle, mild roast malt, dark malt with tiny touch of acidity, with both the roast and acidity growing as it warms. Flavour has a similarly acidic tang, modest roast over dark malt throughout. (7+) Average to medium bodied palate. Pretty decent but doesn’t quite make it to the next level. Bottle, Mondial, Montreal, 5T

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pitch black with reddish hues, light brown head with sticky lacing
Light molasses, tootsie rolls, blackberries, cassis, blueberries, white chocolate
Acid, long lasting bitterness with a lightly sweet finish, slight lack of body
blackberries, preaty much the same as the aromas
Notes: Very evolutive, subtile hints of a flemish sour.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (500ml) at Volo, shared with Blankboy & GregClow. Appearance: Ruby red/brown with a small brown head. Aroma: Alcohol with a slight sour lemon notes, somewhat nutty. As it warms it becomes peaty and smoky. Flavour: Slight sour, malt, peat and chocolate. Very nice. Another great Hopfenstark number!

Tap at Spuyten Duyvil. Aroma of palm oil, roast, with a slick, greasy, thick and steaky body to it. Light bitter in the mouth with good complexity, with lots of roasty coffee in there. Notes of root vegetables are present. Balanced and clean, kind of bourbony despite its lack of barrel aging. Chalky and creamy and easy drinking. I’m looking forward to trying the BBA’d version of this Fred provided.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap at Church Key. Dark brown, light off-white film. Nose oddly lemony, sparkly, not unlike lemon washing up liquid. Undertones of plum. Mouth is plummy, prune, slight sourness and some spice. Slight sweetness, fruity, dark fruit, touch of peach at the end. Woodiness is there too. Really nice. Slight saltiness on the swallow.
