Thumbs up Fred !!!

(On tap during Zwanze Day/Funk Night @ barVolo, Sept 20, 2014) Totally opaque orange tinged gold with no head. Aroma of fresh raspberries, bit of lemon, slightly lactic but not very sour. Palate is another story; a big hit of lemon juice and lactic acid that overpowers the raspberry at first. Raspberry starts to come through in the middle of the palate with a hint of grain. Much more raspberry on the finish, but like eating the fresh fruit. Sourness lingers a bit but drier finish than initial flavour predicts. A real mouth-puckerer, by my reckoning it was by some margin the most sour of the 16 beers I sampled on a day devoted to sour and funky things. It’s driven strongly by both the fruit addition and the powerful Berliner base. I think I might adore it even more in another context, with a full glass on a sunny patio rather than during a day of tasting. Still very tasty stuff.

draft at BarVolo, very impressive Berliner Weiss. slightly hazed blonde pour. bigger mouthfeel. quite acidic & tart. raspberries add a great dimension to the beer. seek this out

[Draught at Station Ho.st, Montreal] Pours a murky yellow with little to no head. Lovely aroma of sour citrus and tart raspberries, not much to write but it smells amazing. Nice sour flavour with tart raspberries and sour citrus -- it’s refreshing! Average bodied. Definitely one of the highlights of this Montreal trip -- well done Fred!

2014-06-13 - on draught at Station HOST, Montreal, at their SourFest. *** Rating #6000 *** While this is NOT the 6,000th beer I have rated, I choose THIS one from my 400+ beer ratings backlog because 1) it was awesome; 2) it was the highlight of Mondiale 2014 for me (not drunk at the festival, but so what); 3) because Fred is an amazing fellow and his bar is the best one in Montreal; 4) just BECAUSE. Anyway. Murky pale gold with a minimal off-white head, but it looks just the part, for me. Holy crap that smells great; like rhubarb-strawberry pie without the sugar - all tart fruit and lemon, even strange lardiness to it (the brain is so impressionable - I told myself "pie" and my nose picked up lard) - so fruity and sour and luscious (9+). Taste - Fred laughed when I asked if there was rhubarb in it (so, that’s "no" apparently), but that’s what my palate interprets this as - with slightly unripe raspberries; tart and genuine - yeah, lemon and dried wildflowers and other stuff, but mostly just ... sour. Thick, slick, acidic, not a lof of carbonation (who cares - it’s airy and SOUR) - finishes perfectly - not too quick or long, just a memory of perfect real fruit tartness, making you want more (I did have more). I’m a sucker for this sort of thing, and this delivered better than any I ever had - well done Fred, keep ’em coming. Probably the best beer I will have in 2014.

on tap on the premises - funky 13 event. cloudy if not muddy pale yellow grey without a head. fresh raspberries with their leaves, very citric and lactic, medium acidity - quite pungent and puckering, underlying wheat with few peppery crackers. low carbonation, light body - oily, dry and grassy-citric finish. cuts through almost any swill.

[5413-20130530] Sample. Spicy raspberry fruit aroma. Hazy, light pink orange body with a quick foamy white head. Sour fruity raspberries in the flavour. Medium body is quite sour. Delicious, great fruity balance. (8/4/8/4/17) 4.1

(1033-130314)

Cloudy white yellow hue, with no head, with a mild sour raspberry nose with a light lactic, milky, acidic note, and a faint lemon juice, tart rhubarb, mild sour lemonade, zesty lemon rind accent in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice sour, lemony, yogurtish lactic, wheat sour mash, light sour raspberry fruity character, with a sour milkyish, tart rhubarb, faint sour green apple flavour, leading towards a good white berry sourness, acidic fruity juicy lemon, sour lactic milkyness finish.
