It’s not a smoke beer. It’s not a tart Berliner Weisse. It’s maybe a weird saison. BerlinerRauchSaison. Yes! Low gravity beer with good presence of wheat. A small layer of smoke malt disappears after a few sips. And light tartness and spice from the Saison yeast. Refreshing and flavourful at the same time.

From the bottle, it pours a cloudy yellow with a thick head that dissipates quickly. Smells of grain, yeast, and citrus, but very mild. Very creamy beer. A bit of smoke, but a lot of yeast and bread. Some light citrus notes. The creamy feel lasts even after the beer is gone, but it feels clean. Really light beer.

Bottle thanks to Alemax. Pours hazy yellow straw gold with quickly settling white head, minimal lacing. Aroma is wheaty, smoky, mildly tart/acidic, ham. Flavor is smoky, wheaty, mildly tart, with a smoky finish and yeasty aftertaste. Soft carbonation, light body, and juicy texture. A smoky, wheaty saison. Interesting, non-traditional, not my favorite.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, sourdough bread), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly yeasty (barnyard, cobwebs), with notes of smoke, lemon zest, apple skins, minerals. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. A surprisingly enjoyable beer, even though it sounds like an utter train wreck. Had it not been Hopfenstark, I might have scrolled past this admittedly far overpriced beer (as all their other beers are, one-time purchases, but thankfully virtually all I’ve tried so far have been enjoyable...if they were priced more sensibly/realistically, I would certainly buy this and the Station 16 again). Thankfully the "Berliner" aspect is the least prominent of the three suggested styles, but it’s still got a healthy lacto bite. The smoke is pretty assertive, more so than expected, and pleasant. But most importantly, it has the balance (aromatically and flavor-wise), low alcohol, and refreshing drinkability a "true" saison should have. Heck, it’s rustic and minerally even. It serves both the "mindless quaffing" mood as well as providing enough complexity for contemplation. Not many brewers could produce something like this. The name is apt for such a singularly interesting beer. But come on, guys...$15 for 25oz of 3.8% beer, smoked of not...that’s where the joy of this review ends. It’s good, sure, but it ain’t THAT good. Cut that stupid price to $5 or $6 and I would buy a case (or two) of this.

Bottle from Whole Foods. Poured hazy golden with off-white lacy head. Nose was pale malt, hopcitrus, tart fruit, smoke. Tasted pale malty, with yeasty hopcitric fruit, smoked peaty malt, and a complex finish. This one was extremely complex and belied its 3.8% ABV. Finished rauchy, tart, hopcitric, yeasty, and damned delicious.

Bottle. Pours a mostly clear yellow gold body with a fizzy thin white head that faded pretty quickly to a thin covering. The nose is pretty interesting, more of a funky Saison than anything, light smoke, some wheat, light yeastiness. There’s a slight note under there that almost smells like vanilla a little bit to me. The flavor is pretty interesting as well, a lot of layers to it, yet it’s still light and easy drinking. A little light smokiness grabs you first along with a light sour wheat note. Reminds me a bit of the one or two Grodziskie beers I’ve tried. Light Saison yeast funkiness under the smoke, a nice light tartness that keeps it lively. Very refreshing and super easy drinking. Nice lively carbonation level. Wish there were a lot more beers like this out there. Lots of flavor, really refreshing, and super low in alcohol. Great.

750mL shared at Woodshop 8. Pours a low haze golden with medium carbonation, spotty lacing. Nose is excellent smoke, sort of Lichtenhainer style with Berliner weisse flashes of acid. Taste though is not tart at all with some bitterness, paper, not a lot of substance.
