COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s not a smoke beer. It’s not a tart Berliner Weisse. It’s maybe a weird saison. BerlinerRauchSaison. Yes! Low gravity beer with good presence of wheat. A small layer of smoke malt disappears after a few sips. And light tartness and spice from the Saison yeast. Refreshing and flavourful at the same time.

Bottle. Wood smoke, lactic acid and malt aroma. Pale yellow with moderate head. Mildly sweet lactic lemon and smoked malt flavor. Nice body. Absolutely delicious.

750mL bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market in OB whenever the hell this came out, like six months ago, for $16.99. Cost to alcohol ratio is quite low with this baby, though Cantillons are much the same at this point. Whatevs. Clear yellow gold with a one finger white head, pretty decent retention. Wonderful aroma of moderate smoked Bamberg-esque malts, and nosing through to some fruity pear and spicy white pepper, biscuit malt backbone. Not finding any Berliner lacto tang in the nose. Lots going on for a sub-four percent beer. Flavor adds a slight tang, but still doesn’t seem lacto-related--more from the yeast? Also, less smoke in the flavor and stronger pear yeasty fruitiness. Bone dry, bitterness peaked at a 2ish, a touch earthy. Moderate to high carbonation with a light body. I’ll probably buy another bottle, but dunno what the shelf life of this is going to be. Probably not all too long. Hopfenstark wins again--this dude knows how to brew.

Bottle, shared with Robbie and my wife. Murky umber hue with a medium white head. Aroma is lightly smoky with underlying spicy wheat. The smoke is subtle, with just enough presence to add a lovely rusticity to this beer’s light wheaty spicy profile. Finish is lightly tart, drawing you back for more-- so drinkable and satisfying! If I could buy this locally, I would have it in my fridge always.

On tap at Belmont Station, pours a crystal clear golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma of lightly tart wheat, some subtle smoked notes, and biscuit. Flavour brings out notes smoked malt and refreshingly dry wheat, with only a small hint of tartness. The smokiness wonderfully compliments the dry wheat, surprisingly. Fantastic stuff.

Whoa! It had a murky straw color, and an assertive smokey nose. But not Bamberg Rauchbier-smokey -- a bit more subtle. The smoke flavor was also subdued, but quite evident, accenting the tart yet not quite sour, slightly cereal flavor. At 3.8% it was one of the few beers under 5% at the Fest -- a nice change of pace.

Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours light golden with a decent off-white head and a funky fruit aroma. There is a fruity smoked malt flavor with a nice yeast presence and a slightly tart finish. Very refreshing.
