It’s not a smoke beer. It’s not a tart Berliner Weisse. It’s maybe a weird saison. BerlinerRauchSaison. Yes! Low gravity beer with good presence of wheat. A small layer of smoke malt disappears after a few sips. And light tartness and spice from the Saison yeast. Refreshing and flavourful at the same time.

Bottle, shared with Robbie and my wife. Murky umber hue with a medium white head. Aroma is lightly smoky with underlying spicy wheat. The smoke is subtle, with just enough presence to add a lovely rusticity to this beer’s light wheaty spicy profile. Finish is lightly tart, drawing you back for more-- so drinkable and satisfying! If I could buy this locally, I would have it in my fridge always.

On tap at Belmont Station, pours a crystal clear golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma of lightly tart wheat, some subtle smoked notes, and biscuit. Flavour brings out notes smoked malt and refreshingly dry wheat, with only a small hint of tartness. The smokiness wonderfully compliments the dry wheat, surprisingly. Fantastic stuff.

Whoa! It had a murky straw color, and an assertive smokey nose. But not Bamberg Rauchbier-smokey -- a bit more subtle. The smoke flavor was also subdued, but quite evident, accenting the tart yet not quite sour, slightly cereal flavor. At 3.8% it was one of the few beers under 5% at the Fest -- a nice change of pace.

Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours light golden with a decent off-white head and a funky fruit aroma. There is a fruity smoked malt flavor with a nice yeast presence and a slightly tart finish. Very refreshing.

Capped 750 from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours hazy gold with a foamy white head. Aroma is lightly, lightly smoky with something like a non-sour Berliner Weisse background. Med body, almost. Flavor is lightly smoky, and there’s something like earthy lemon. It’s certainly not sour, but it is arguably tart. It’s certainly different, and it’s working pretty well on a hot evening. I’m liking it more and more.

Pours a lovely clear solar yellow with a very thick, fluffy, and fairly persistent off-white head. Aroma is not strong, but still tempts with sweet malt, yeasty and banana tones. Eminently pleasing flavor delights the palate with sweet malt, banana, pear, yeast, and subtle hoppy notes. Texture has about average weight but good fizz. Low gravity, high enjoyability.

Bottle - bought at the behest of my physicist wife :). Pours clear golden yellow with some small floaties. Medium fizzy white head that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving a residual that nevertheless laces well. Aroma is very saison-like, yeast, grass, smoke, coriander. Flavor is about the same, noticeably but delicately smoky, a bit fruity, a lot of yeast character. Light sweet, no real bitterness. Just a touch of tartness, some peppery spice. Light bodied, prickly carbonation in the mouth. This is quite a nice beer actually!

BerlineRauchSaison is certainly what this one is. This poured a hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma was of mild lemon rind, spices, and smoked malt. Flavor was at first zesty spices and light fruit, blanketed by a mild notes of smokes. Very lgiht and refreshing and flavorful.

22, capped. Pours a clear medium amber with burnished golden brown highlights. Loose creamy white head that doesn’t stick around too long. Lots of rings of sedimentary lace. Lemons and dandelion greens on the nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb, maybe a little flabby. Mostly dandelion greens on the mid palate with lemon showing. Mild tart finish. Not too shabby.
