Black pour with an off-white head. Aroma holds a lot of really nice complex smoke and earth. Flavor holds a lot more smoke, but not a ton of complexity. Still a good drinkable palate and very tasty.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2010 Tap at Volo (in cask). Great beer. Aromas of grain, caramel, and chocolate. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes. Palate is syrupy, with a full body. Black, with a head that disappears. Re-rate: Tap at Saint-Bock brewery. Aromas of roasted coffee, grass, chocolate. Taste has a sweet start, with bitterness taking over for a long finish. Velvety, with a medium-to-full body. Black, with a frothy head.

Draft. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt. Taste is coffee, chocolate, roasty with a big hop bite. They had it listed as a black IPA but who knows.

On tap at Trou du diable brewpub. A dark, opaque ale with brownish, almost purple reflects. Light beige head with little retention. Mostly tastes of coffee, maybe a bit of very dark chocolate. Bitterness dominates. A strong cofee finish, with lingering coffee bitterness. Not as thick as I would’ve expected in mouth, has subtle, pleasant notes of alcohol considering its alcohol contents.

Taste nuts and vanilla, crisp noble hops, aroma has some coffee, cocoa, brown sugar, molasses. Butterscotch and caramel. Nice!

On tap at Saint-Bock. Pours a dark brown with a thin beige rim that surprisingly leave good lacing. Nose is quite simply of dark chocolate. Taste is of the same chocolate but this time you also get some licorice and roasted malt. Body is medium and carbonation just the same. Overall a nice stout, nothing harsh or out of balance.

(tap at Cask Days 2014) clear very dark brown colour with a small brown head; aroma of tropical fruit ,stewed fruit; balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish; half way between a stout and an ipa

On cask for Cask Days at Volo in Toronto. Served in an English pint glass. Pours pure black with a small, rocky tan head. The head remains but does not lace. The aroma has notes of sweet, roasted malts, along with licorice, flowers, pine and some earth. The flavour is sweet up front with anise, becoming sweeter with a hop accent towards the end. It is full in body with a smooth, milky texture and flat carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice stout with a nice roasty aroma and a delicious anise accent. 2010-10-29
