VTHopHead (1503) - Barre, Vermont, USA - AUG 22, 2010
Sample at the 2010 VT Brewers Fest - Poured from a cask. Poured a brownish amber in color with a small light tan head and little carbonation. Aroma is a bit fruity with floral and citrus hops. Flavor followed pretty closely and exhibited a nice citrus/grapefruit mix along with some light fruitiness (apple/grape?). Lingering bitter finish. Very good.

My Bottom Line:
A perfume of floral hops and actual petals swirls into this perilously drinkable Bitter, efficiently reaching a firm and earthy hop bitterness. Citrusy fruitiness also leaks from this jolly hop bouquet as quaffability soars.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A fluffy head of foam covers the misty deep copper red.
-The body is healthy (maybe a little too slim for my tastes though), yet there are few malt flavors; malt complexity could be increased a tad.
-Carbonation is very low due to the cask serving; this is a very authentic pint of bitter throughout.
-Chocolatey allusions are perceived in the aroma once in a while.
-A wooden dryness accompanies the finishing hop bitterness.

On cask at Vices et Versa.

Rastacouere (6107) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 25, 2007
Cloudy chestnut brown bitter in excellent condition, showcasing a large and lasting off-white foam. Quite a leafy and highly earthy nose where the toasted, almost roasted nutty hints are taken on by heavier hops than expected. They did make it bitter indeed, insisting on its fruity hop aromatics, rather citrusy on top of its generous earthiness. A fun take on the style and worthy of its cask conditioning.

Sampled cask conditioned at Vices et Versa. The pour reveals a murky brownish amber color with a medium offwhite head. Very pleasant aroma of earthy, fruity hops with fruity caramel. Good flavor of earthy, grapefruity hops with caramel and a solid bitter finish. The body is light with a soft, pillowy texture provided by the cask conditioning and low carbonation. Good stuff.

On tap at the brewery, dark amber color, with a fluffy beige head, leaving laces, yeasty, fruity nose of ripe apple, with a hint of cloverleaf spiciness, a nice earthy flowery hop cedary, within a faint pine niddle accent, in a subtle toasty malt aroma follows though on a medium-bodied plate with a yeasty, mild toasty, acidic, spiced hoppy character, kind of a juicy, piney, cedary, leafy hop flavor, leading towards a leafy, bittering finish.

Cask at Vices et Versa. The color is a hazy amber with a beige head The taste is of spicies and hops and also fruits with a nice bitter taste and aftertaste. This is one time I did not see to much difference between cask and tap.

In short: Soft fruity English Ale. Smooth and pleasant.
How: Cask at Vices & Versa (sipping in Rastacouere pint)
The look: ruby-amber body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Very soft beer. Delicate malt profile with fruity flavours mixing red fruits and dark fruits. Quite earthy too. The complete opposite of a crisp beer this is very smooth, even velvety beer. Overly soft carbonation (even by cask standards). The mostly aromatic hops provide a very light bitterness with a little touch of grapefruit. After drinking quite a few pints over there I must say that this is not quite what I’ve come to expect from a Cask Bitter. This is even a rare case where I doubt that the cask is the proper vehicle. Still this is a nice beer that I will sure have again. If all hooligans were that pleasant and soft, then after European football games you’d have a bunch of blue-shirt guys hugging a bunch of green-shirt guys.

CASK AT VICES VERSA - Sharply bitter and yeasty attack. A bit earthy and fruity. Vert dry hop finish really is ’bitter’ and notably leafy and lean.

Cask sample at Vermont brewers festival.
Appearance : Amber
Aroma : Mineral and earthy. Quite malty. Some caramel.
Taste : Fruity and mineral. Quite earthy. Finish is a tad bitter and quite crisp.
Overall : Enjoyable fruits. Not bad. Interesting I would say.
