radiomgb (1920), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Feb 15, 2009 Updated: Feb 16, 2009Black in colour with a large tan coloured head, excellent lacing. The aroma is lightly sweet, some malt bitterness, burnt, creamy. The flavour is of dark malts, quite burnt, some sweetness comes through at times, chocolate and a bit of alcohol at times. Smooth mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long, light sweetness, creamy.
This one was pretty close to the oak version although it didn’t have the same sweetness. Slightly better.
Bottle at Mondial 2008, Montreal, Quebec.
Sampled on May 30, 2008.
tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jan 17, 2009 Strong roasted malt aroma with some biscuity character. Opaque black body topped by very shy brown rapidly and fully diminishing head. Overly sweet and quite boozy with notes of chocolate and roasted malt. Fruity esters emerge in the aftertaste. Medium full body is syrupy in texture with not nearly enough carbonation which leaves it feeling a bit cloying. Wonder if this is a bottling issue (but I don’t see any signs of oxidation)? With stronger carbonation this might be quite nice... Tulip glass. Bottle purchased at the brewery in June 2008. probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Oct 28, 2008 500 ml bottle from the brewery via Lubiere, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a large mocha meringue.
Aroma: Lots of sweet stewed prunes, raisins, boozy, very deep molasses, some licorice, some berries, quite fruity, only a bit of dark chocolate and black coffee, some tang.
Palate: Medium-full body, soft carbonation, smooth and a touch powdery.
Flav.: Like the nose, it is very fruity, somewhat woody, a bit boozy, some pine and resinous hops, some citrus, still tangy; on swallowing, fairly, some wood, sweet and somewhat bitter, light fruitiness and black coffee hangs behind.
An interesting Impy. Much fruitier than many and the booze is a bit too evident. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 24, 2008 Pitch black pour with a medium. light brown head. Sweetness wafts into my nose and then roasted malt and chocolate blend in. Good flavor of roasted malt, chocolate and lingering sweetness. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and gentle carbonation. tomthompson89 (1453), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 21, 2008 at Volo, Pitch black pour, not much head, looks oily, nose is earthy roasted malts some briny saltyness and maybe a little licorice. flavor has alcohol kick, dark malt uhhm i get some soya sauce, weird mix of flavors. Not a fav mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 9, 2008 [1441-20080531] Tap. Boozy roasted malt aroma with toasted grains. Black body with a medium-lasting foamy dark brown head. Roasted coffee malt flavour has lots of burnt roast. Full body is a little watery. Roasty and pleasant.

Aroma of roast coffee, dark chocolate too, black with a tiny tan head. Flavour is an upfront roast coffee, loads of dark chocolate. Full bodied, extremely well balanced, beautifully bitter, the alcohol isn’t even noticed. Fantastic! Lubiere (4462), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jun 8, 2008 A deep dark imperial stout with a thick resilient moka head. In aroma, an enticing chocolate and coffee aroma, enticing, pungeant. In mouth, a funkey chocolate with herbal touches, alcohol, lightly mentholated. A very classy example of the style. On tap at brewpub, April 2008.
