West Coast style IPA from this up and coming brewpub eventually brewery. Samped at Mondiale 2007. Fresh, orange with a little head. Grapefruit nose. Orange citrus taste. Medium mouthfeel and very refreshing finish. Top 15% IPA.

A reddish dark amber ale with a thin off white head. A nice hoppey aroma, with berries, and oragne notes. In mouth, a sweetish lactic malt, with caramel and floral hops, but a bit thin and short in mouth. On tap at Vices versa, Jan. 2007.

On tap at Vices et Versa. The color is amber with a beige head. The aroma and aste is of citrus fruits and hops with a bit of sweet caramel. What I liked about this one is the go feeling the bitter taste left in my mouth.

Comments: That’s a marvel and frankly, nothing less than what I expected from these guys, pure unadulterated citrus hops glory combined with delicate complex yeastiness, all supported by genuine, pure, crunchy cerealic malts, both chewy and crisp. Two thumbs up!

Goldorak (439) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 5, 2007
Sampled at Vices & Versa during their 3rd anniversary party.

A darker shade of caramel/copper, with a thin, but sturdy and clingy lace.
Started subdued and flowery sweet, the citrusy c-hops became more and more present, and showed some resinous tones too.
Clean and quaffable, with an excellent balance of crunchy malts and crisp, bitter hops and a dry finish. From a brewery that just opened, I’m impressed. This isn’t a tongue twister, but it has about all of the elements I look for in an IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This starkly unfiltered IPA is chock full of pine-pricked, earth-covered oranges bursting out of and growing within a scrumptiously nutritious caramel malt body. Full of honesty and smacking goodness, this is yet another Hopfenstark product with which I wouldn’t mind spending many evenings.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head settles atop the opaque orangey red.
-A well-conceived cereal/caramel malt base provides plenty of support and almost balance the dallying hop presence.
-A Simcoe-like sandy character is perceived within the Centennial dominance.
-This is quite easy to down despite its size and richness in content.
-This frank IPA would easily fit in Willimantic’s lineup of idiosyncratic IPAs.
-For some reason, it tends to express itself a lot better on cask.

From bottles, and on tap and on cask at Vices et Versa.

Glouglouburp (5938) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 30, 2007
Cloudy dark-orange body with a long lasting small beige head. This is one foresty IPA. Pine-tree flavours abound with some tree bark, why not some oak. Soft and juicy body with some earthy notes. Not the “clean” type of IPA but not the dirty type either, a nice medium. Juicy floral hops with a long but never aggressive bitterness. Some lemony tartness makes you want more and more. A great addition to the improving Quebec beer scene. As foresty as the pre-colonial Quebec, as bitter as the post-colonial Quebec.
