Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #10. Vermont Brewer’s Fest, July 2008, sample 2 (draught). Dark gold-amber in the glass, with more head than is usually found in these samplings...grapefruit, apricots, perhaps a touch of wild thyme alongside more rough grassy notes in the lovely nose...flavor is at first soft and nicely balanced between sourness and a supple malty sweetness, but it does get more strongly tart towards the finish, with a sour-apple character eventually appearing and a dry ending. I had had mixed feelings about this brewery before, and had disliked another saison (de Seigle) the previous year at the Mondial; this was a real improvement and led to me re-trying the de Seigle at fest, which proved very worthwhile. Small, new brewers can be like that - I’m glad in this case the turn was for the better, at least from my small sampling.

A hazy blonde saison with a thin white head. A pleasant gueuzy aroma with some light creamy notes, epsom salts. In mouth, a smooth gueuze like saison, quite nice and smooth, veering on Cantillon. On tap at Mondial 2010.

(Rating #2783)

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2009 Tap @ Host 3rd anniversary. Pale hazy gold pour with great white head. Lot’s of sour brett aromas, raw bread dough and the likes. Quite the dry sour taste with just a hint of cookie like sugar for perfect balance, beautiful saison.

Mondial 2009, Montreal. Cloudy creamsicle orange with a film of head. Smells like a sweetish saison (spice, citrus, barnyard, icing sugar). Lots of citrus (lemon, grapefruit) in the flavour. Perfect sourness. Clean, crisp and dry. Excellent saison - probably the best in Canada.

Glass at Hopfenstark. Dark hazy yellow. Strong zesty nose. Lemon body with less zest than was in the scent. Aftertaste is cool; lemon, zesty better than initial taste.
