3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
"this was unique, especially in the aroma, tan with a medium-full body for the style. nice brew. aroma slightly hoppy, with a definite rye character, but also some bark (?) and earthy. the saisoniness is in the background in the flavor too, but it’s pretty nice all around."

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (6.5% ABV, brewed May 2013).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is hazy medium yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of gum, lemon zest, pepper, hint of spearmint.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Whoa, baby! Ok, so this is a Saison Dupont clone, there should be absolutely no debate about that. It’s not quite as aromatically vibrant/complex (obviously not as phenolic), and the finish is not as balanced/bitter as Dupont, but otherwise this is a fantastic rendition. It’s very clean, and offers a fantastic fluffy mouthfeel. Alas, the matter of price is where the glowing words must end...at the same store here in Boulder, this beer is $15 compared to Dupont at $9. So...Dupont is better...and *substantially* cheaper. So explain to me why I would ever buy this again?

750, capped. Pours a slightly hazy burnished medium gold with a loose white head that doesn’t stick around. Wet grass and some oregano on the nose. Flabby medium body. Floral notes, grass, and oregano on the mid palate. Not their best stuff.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Vices & Versa. Pours a hazy, bubbly yellow-gold with an average size diminishing white head. Lovely aroma with lots of fruit, spices and light floral hops. Flavour’s quite floral, fruity, spicy and with a light bitterness. Medium bodied. A unique and enjoyable take on the style.

(Rating #1211)

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught. At Vices et Versa. This is the Saison Hopfenstark blends with their Postcolonial IPA to make the Wonderful Saison 55. This one pours a slightly hazy gold, average white head. Simple and crisp aroma, bitter spice and herbal notes, sweet fruity malt - clove, coriander, apple and banana. The taste follows, but there is more fruitiness and less herbal/pungent spice bitterness and more sweet, yeasty malt - it veered toward hefe flavour. Light body, slightly dry and astringent from the spiciness, with a quick finish to the sweet malt and a linger that was all mildly bitter spice. "bloody pleasant / sneaky-complex" are my closing notes.

Comments: A rather chewy example with the rye’s uniform mouthfeel. Interesting beer per se, but it lacks a bit the freshness I appreciate in the style which sounds rather ironic as Hopfenstark’s beers always feel hugely fresh. How I mean it, possibly a paler grain profile, more pointy, sharp hops and less overall thickness would ease the drinkability. To their defense, their blonde already does awesome in that department.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 28, 2007 Cloudy glowing orange body topped by a short-lived medium white head. Leafy coriander, herbal spices and lots of freshly squeezed citrus fruits in a yeast dough. Very yeasty beer with a doughy mouthfeel, maybe even a little floury. Feeling of drinking an orange muffin. Finish is orange flavour with some leafy hops. Another good offering from Hopfenstark. I can drink that stuff until the taxi suddenly takes on colorful aspect, makes loud noise and has a spinning light on top of it.
