4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Effervescent and lightly hazed honey-colored body with a fine white head. Very Dupont-like nose. Citrus fruit, sugar / sugar cookie, peppercorns and phenols. Hoppier and sharper and closer to the recent Cuvée dry hopped batch. There’s a difficult to identify aroma that’s something like orange juice pulp, aromatic hop cones and bathsoap... it really seems to be the key to why the aroma works so well here. Medium body with soft and creamy carbonation, lots of tart, dried fruits, a silky, creamy but frothy and filling yeast character with natural carbonation to give it softness. Astonishing tartness and dryness in a beer that seemingly smells sugary and fruity. Crisp, quenching acid, medium+ bitterness, low sweetness, good acid, quaffable and flavorful. Mild hints of alcohol emerge after it breathes and warms.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, shared with Robbie. Very hazy straw yellow, lively white head. Very estery nose and palate, lacking significant hops, but this bottle may be old. Lightly spicy, chalky mouthfeel, dry finish. Not foul, but nothing stands out here.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from City Beer. Pours murky golden with a decent white head and a sharp fruity aroma. There is a slightly sour fruit and light malt flavor, with a dry finish. Not much of a yeast presence and a bit light on flavor, but easy to drink.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (6.5% ABV, brewed May 2013).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is hazy medium yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of gum, lemon zest, pepper, hint of spearmint.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Whoa, baby! Ok, so this is a Saison Dupont clone, there should be absolutely no debate about that. It’s not quite as aromatically vibrant/complex (obviously not as phenolic), and the finish is not as balanced/bitter as Dupont, but otherwise this is a fantastic rendition. It’s very clean, and offers a fantastic fluffy mouthfeel. Alas, the matter of price is where the glowing words must end...at the same store here in Boulder, this beer is $15 compared to Dupont at $9. So...Dupont is better...and *substantially* cheaper. So explain to me why I would ever buy this again?
