3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
’Tripel hop’ is sometimes considered a new substyle of tripel in Belgium nowadays, and all of them are more or less indebted to the first Duvel Tripel Hop; I guess most of these new generation hoppy Belgian ales qualify for the ’Belgian IPA’ label, but some are hoppier than others and to begin with, being hoppy does not automatically make an ale an IPA, of course. This one is Hopjutters’ interpretation, the hobby brewers a friend of mine knows in person. Initially thick and frothy but quickly diminishing though well-retaining, lacing, egg-white head over a warm ’old gold’ coloured, almost clear beer, more orange and misty with deposit. Elegant and inviting aroma of freshly cut grass and nettles, fresh strawberries and even a slight hint of strawberry ice cream, orange juice, a ton of field flowers, red apple, overripe peach, young ’jenever’, unripe mango, apple cake, honey - this seems to blend the aromatic ’citrusness’ of American IPAs (clearly the most ’world-conquering’ beer style of our day and age) with the good old yeasty ’esteriness’ of Belgian tripels quite well. Based on the aroma alone, this already reveals itself as a perfect candidate for the ’Belgian IPA’ label. Taste begins with fruity esters (mango, blood orange, peach, pineapple) and a strong, sharp carbonation, sourish touch and a subtle hint of the ensuing citrussy hop bitterness already in the onset; smooth, bready malt sweetishness follows, spicy yeasty accents dancing on top of it, eventually evolving in a satisfying finish of persisting yeasty fruitiness, juicy maltiness and of course the expected floral, aromatically herbal, lightly citrussy hops, with a more earthy bitterness to them as well; still, it is the initial fruit sweetness which lingers the longest. Honestly speaking, I expected more hop bitterness, but I would still consider this a good and typical example of a Belgian IPA; I think it’s about time this website begins to recognize this as a style, though admittedly it would become very hard to distinguish between it and both abbey tripel and ’Belgian strong ale’ (which by itself does not mean anything in the first place). In any case, however, I would not have classified it here as a full-fledged IPA - I am still waiting for the first real American-style IPA in this country (the collaborations between Saint-Feuillien and Green Flash notwithspoken). Not considering style issues though, this is a very pleasant beer, clearly made with love as is advertized on the label, very ’Belgian’ in its yeasty esteriness, but well-balanced at that, without any obvious off-flavours. I expected a lot less from this, nice surprise.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. It pours a big, foamy white head over a sparkling, almost clear golden colored body. The aroma is quite grassy and piney, but with too much white sugar and pale malts. Some lemon notes. Herbal hints, grass, resin notes, orange zest and a generic fruityness in the flavor. Full body, quite effervescent and semi-dry. Lasting finish. Might be a bit old this bottle, but I’m far from impressed. 150314
