2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, roasted grain), heavily hoppy (resin, grapefruit), with notes of vanilla and alcohol.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Seemed a fitting beer to crack for the holiday, but sadly it illustrates the poorer aspects of brewing in this country. This is a clumsy, ridiculously overhopped beer...the nose is nearly obliterated with pine resin and grapefruit rind, and what’s left beyond that is pretty simplistic. Fairly sour and watery and burning in the mouth too, so the drinking experience is as disappointing as the nose. The best part about it is the appearance...genuine first-pour opacity and a lasting head make it a joy to observe, but it fails in all other respects. A stereotypical example of unrefined American excess.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
from Erzbierschof - black beer with a modest foam left; aroma of corn, roasted chocolate and red fruity hops; full-bodied, tasty and fairly bitter; quite creamy palate; pretty dry with an aftertaste of ashes, black chocolate and more corny and generous hoppy notes - very nice

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate, light black licorice, roasted malt, rye, and pine. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a two finger brown head with good retention. There’s a good a amount of dotted lacing left behind. The flavor starts with with moderate chocolate and light roasted malt. It finishes with light black licorice, lighter black coffee, fruit, pine, and a touch of rye. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Pibar, Lausanne
Black color with medium sized beige head. In the aroma the resiny hops surpass the roasted malt; there is a lot of chocolate too, wood over bread; very nice. Full bodied, smooth, highly carbonated; strong chocolate flavor, then also strong roasted malt (too much roastiness indeed); moderate residual sweetness; very strong bitterness, resiny.
Extreme, very good overall, with exceptional aroma and less interesting final.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, courtesy of Kermis, @ Dean sticky floor tasting 2. Pours a very black beer with a nice creamy beige head. Aroma is grassy, hoppy. More of a black IPA than an Imperial Stout. Flavour is quite bitter with some hoppy influences and a nice balance between hop and malt. Great.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz. bottle. Aroma of roasty, chocolate malt, piney hop, black bread and a faint hint of spice from the rye, some toffee in the background as well. Black in color with dark brown highlights around the edges of the glass and a tan head that fades. Flavor profile seems to land somewhere between a Double Black IPA and an Imperial Porter, with plenty of roasty, dark chocolate malt and hoppy bitterness, along with suggestions of dark sweetness, lightly charred grain, coffee, pine, resin and earthiness. Decent complexity here. Finely effervescent, dry and lightly warming on the palate, body is full. Nice one!
