3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle generously shared by Sparky! Dark mocha-colored pour with a small latte head. It’s a tad bit thinner than expected but still chewy and coating. Most Pappy-barrelled beers pick up a differentiating complexity, smoothness, spiciness, and richness This one, unfortunately, wasn’t set apart from it’s less rare brethren. In fact, I would say that I enjoyed the others a bit more. Perhaps timing is everything...more months soaking up the decadent whiskey might have helped. Dark fruit, cocoa, vanilla, a hint of oak, and a bit of booze. Still very enjoyable, however, and excited to have tried it!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sample at the Hoppin’ Frog Tasting Room. Inky black color with a medium thin khaki head that diminishes gradually to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Bourbon, roasted malt and chocolate in the nose. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, chocolate malt and raisins, with a hint of banana. The finish is dark chocolate and bourbon. Another good entry in the BORIS series.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle... Poured jet black with a thin forming, lacy, retaining, tan head. nice barrel, whiskey booze, and sweet vanilla pastry aroma. Smooth, nice mouthfeel, not too viscous or too thin. Just right. Lovely, cocoa, toffee, toasted grains and barrel character here. Dark chocolate with a hint of mocha and sweetness smoothed this one out.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared at 4th of July BBQ (Lyons, IL). Pours a rich deep blackish hue, opaque and dark with firmer brown dark head atop. Decent retention and stick around, mellow lacing overall. Aromas show some firmer sweetness, caramel and cocoa meet with vanilla, fudge and gentle espresso elements hitting the palate. Some cake elements, gentle roast and char come in but a bit light. Initial is firmer bodied, a bit sweet overall with fudge, caramel and toffee giving some depth, body. Touches of spirit are warm, vanillin and whiskey meet with sweet malt elements really making this a rich, sticky experience. Even with barrel time, this has held up a bit too much. Backend is a waft of dark fruit, roast and toast elements come in a bit more. Touch of whiskey and tannic oak, sweetness and stickiness still hangs on a bit. Full of flavor and a bit big overall, the spirit and barrel is still pretty firm though indicating more barrel time wouldn’t have helped. Some sweetness, oak hang on as we finish. Pretty solid stuff.
