COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
On a recent trip through Belgium visiting the monastery breweries, we discovered an excellent barrel aged ale that had an incredibly satisfying flavor combination. Aging in oak barrels added a memorable richness, that we seek to achieve with this barrel aged Belgian-style barley wine-style ale. Being the ideal celebration beer to release on our 5-year anniversary, Barrel Aged Naked Evil is fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts and aged in whiskey barrels for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.

Bottle HUGE thanks to my summer secret santa! Pour has an orange red amber thing going on and a ring of white bubbles around the glass. Aroma has malts, big barrel influence, vanilla, sweet bourbon, oak, dark fruited touches, and sweet custard. Very nicely done with a nice richness and complementing sweetness. Mouth feel is a medium and there is low side carbonation but not much. Flavor has a bit more malt, big sweetness, custard, vanilla, oak, dark fruit, and bourbon. The belgian yeast adds less spice than expected and there is a bit of earthy esters mixed in with alcohol heat.

650 ml bottle @ PBF IX (vertical with the original version). Pours a dark amber colour with a small head. Aroma of rich bourbon wooden notes, wet earthiness and some herbal notes. Rich flavour of sweet maltiness, bourbon, tart wooden notes, green apples, herbal notes and spiciness. Full bodied with smooth mouthfeel. Sweet and elegant. Much better than the original non-BA version.

Bottled@PBF IX. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is liquorice, mild glue, some slight alcohol as well as ripe fruits. Flavour is alcohol, some mild glue, ripe fruits and some wooden notes. OK balance, but alcohol is a bit too evident.

Vertical withBelgian-style Barley Wine-style Ale
Aroma is sweet with caramel and some whisky tones. Flavour is rather sweet and heavy with whisky tones, caramel, some warming alcohol and . This is better, I’d say. The whisky notes make this more complex and balanced - it eats the disturbing sweetness.

Vertical with Sweet Evil - Pours dark orange with a smooth head, slightly darker than Sweet Evil. Aroma of caramely malts, toffee, wood, oak, vanilla, yeast, whiskey and ripe fruits. Taste is sweet, woody, oaky, caramely and stuffy with notes of vanilla, toffee and ripe fruits. Finish is sweet, sticky and woody with oaky notes, vanilla, toffee and ripe fruits. Sweeter than Sweet Evil, but in a different way, and this has more body and is more complex, so I prefer this.

(free beer week bottle from PeteinSD, thanks Peter!) Pours a deep red color with a very thin off-white head that just leaves a thin film at the top. A little lacing as well, but nothing to write home about. Actually the beer looks more orange when held to the light. Aroma is really strong and intriguingly unusual, with scents of booze-soaked pineapple, concord grape juice (or the carbonated Cold Duck stuff), maraschino cherries, and is further accompanied by more traditional scents of deep caramel and the slightest tinges of prune and sherry oxidation which tells me that I probably have a 2011 bottling (couldn’t find the date anywhere). Some barrel here too, and if I had to guess, I would think that the barrel housed some kind of high rye mash bill whiskey as I’m getting kicks of that as well and not so much the oak. With further warming, the barrel really begins to show, and the oak emerges too. Now I don’t normally have beers that smell as odd as this one transfer their aromatic characteristics as intensely in the flavor itself, but this one does it in spades. Right off the bat, there’s a big flavor of stewed fruit (pineapple, plum, etc.) that quickly switches to big time ambrosia salad which includes the whipped cream flavor and marshmallows. Good amount of toffee here too, but my criticism of this beer is that it’s incredibly sweet, and I have no qualms in saying that it’s really cloying. I was expecting some kind of dry or spicy aspect of the barrel to smack the sweetness away on the finish, but it never arrives and the sweetness just languishes on the tongue. In fact, the barrel is notably absent here in the flavor. Only a faint glimmer of it is present in the far finish. Probably due to the age, but there’s also no hop bitterness to provide a contrast to the sweetness. Mouthfeel is perfect though, being rich and weighty, with a nice, even carbonation that doesn’t intrude, and the only evidence of the high ABV is displayed by the sheen at the top of the beer, so it only impinges on the eye instead of the nose and tastebuds. Overall this is a great beer in small quantities, but merely good when drank in its entirety.

Bottle @ Mikkellerbar, Viktoriagade. Pours clear dark auburn with a lasting off-white minimal head. Aroma is very malty, candy, alcohol, bread, whisky, malt syrup. Taste heavy sweet, light+ bitter. Body is full, texture is syrupy, carbonation is soft+. Finishes malty, warming and sweet. Whisky and sweetness integrates neatly,
