4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 FlandersNed (13) - , USA - NOV 29, 2011
22oz competition bottling with a label as generic as the Bourbon barrel-aged version. My 1,530th new beer rating of 2011, but worth posting since it’s not on ’either’ site. A nearly-clear, year-old penny/copper hue with tiny dustiness throughout and a low tan bubble film. An 11.3%, FG 9.4 P, 48 IBU brew with sweet caramel, toffee and banana bread notes. Added hints of orange oil, milk chocolate and vanilla rounded it out. A smooth, English / Belgian barley wine flavor loaded with orchard and dark fruits - that the label claimed would "...build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor." Full-bodied with moderate carbonation more akin to a cask-aged English BW. Awesome and surprisingly close to the Bourbon barrel-aged version!

Taste is sweet with more coconut creme pie, toasted coconut, oak, sweet malt, fruit notes, vanilla, booze, and soft yeast notes. Body is medium with soft carbonation, mild warmth and a moderate stickiness. Ends with more toasted coconut, cake, oak, booze, fruit notes, sweet malt, light caramel and soft yeast.

Bottle shared at Dark Lord Day 2012 (Munster, IN). Pours a fiery orange amber hue, glowing rich edges with frothy tannish head atop, laces ok. Aromas are touches of toffee, biscuits, and toast. Some barrel, spirit, and spice. Simple. Initial is medium bodied, a bit thinned, with mellow spirit, toffee and biscuits. Gentle oak, vanilla, and whiskey elements. Biscuits, toast, a gentle marmalade element. Buttery oak, spice, and some coconut. Vanilla, a bit sweet and richer into the backend. Toffee, vanilla, spirit. Solid barrel aged barleywine that comes on a bit more into the finish.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 phredrik (886) - Aalborg, DENMARK - APR 28, 2012
22 oz bottle from ØlKonsortiet. Lovely coppery red pour with a small rim of white head. Aroma is just wow! Lots of sweetness - creamy toffey, lots of coconut and vanilla from the barrels, notes of cinnamoned apples, raisins, sherry, turkish delights, syrupy dates. The malty complexity, the estery Belgium yeast and the bourbon barrelling just adds up to a very harmoneous and extraordinarily pleasant aroma. The taste is very similar to the aroma, mainly focused on fruity yeast esters and barrel impact. There is a hint of alcohol as it lingers which is pretty much the only element in the beer that contrasts the sweetness. It is an intensely sweet beer, so it isn’t a beer for those who despise cloying beers. Luckily, I don’t, so I enjoy this beer, just as I enjoy singing Taylor Swift songs in front of the shower. Naked.. Lonely.. And crying..
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ughsmash (5836) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - APR 25, 2012
Bomber. Poured crystal-clear medium copper with a short, but easily-resuscitated beige head. The aroma was huge, with rich, aged toffee and caramel notes marrying well with sweet whiskey malt.. warm, peppery whiskey and oak around.. well-rounded, and thankfully the base beer was big enough to stand up to the barrel. The flavor found a whole host of fruits (pear and lesser green apple) and licorice that I wasn’t expecting.. some of the toffee and caramel from the nose, plus a little brown sugar, but not enough.. the barrel gave some oaky and lesser whiskey tartness and peppery alcohol around, and some vanilla sweetness on the middle.. finished fruity with a good dose of alcohol warmth. Heavier-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. alcohol presence was appropriate.. OK feel, but it could’ve been a little smoother.. overall a good, big beer.
