4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
very impressive. we thought this was just another crappy beer in a cool bottle when we got it in medina, ohio over christmas, but while we were checking out a very knowledgable worker let us know that one of the brewers from thirsty dog went out and made his own brewing company and hoppin frog was born. and thus, we were interested. the flavor was mainly that of the stout with some oatmeal, some coffee, some chocolate although it also had some hints of hoppiness to it. intense but i bet the other brews from these guys probably rock. can’t wait to have more...

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thanks to OhioDad! I was looking forward to this one after enjoying the IPA and BORIS the last couple nights. Poured a translucent coppery-garnet with a short-lived beige head. The aroma found hefty pine notes upfront paired very well with more roasted oats than I found in BORIS... after that it needed time to air out before roasted coffee emerged. Flavor had deeply-roasted coffee backing with pervasive pine and citrus bitterness... sweet chocolate and burnt oats on the back half. Higher bitterness throughout and medium-bodied... long, bitter roasted finish. Enjoyed it! Thanks Scott!

Opaque brown body with a creamy deep tan head. Robust nose of sweet malty coffee with an added nuttiness. Roasted black-coffee flavor. Quite bitter. Creamy mouth-feel.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep, dark brown with a light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, and hops. Flavor has a strong roastedness with some hops. The finish leaves the mouth coated with a roasted aftertaste.

22 oz. bomber from OhioDad. I’m trying to figure out if this is a slightly roasty hoppy beer or a hoppy roasty beer??? oh well, either way its a tasty one! hoppy aroma leads to a hoppy slightly roasty flavor. very nice, I’m looking forward to the other three from Hoppin Frog. Thanks for the hook-up Scott.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 30, 2007 Pours very dark brown with a solid tan head, admirable retention. Obnoxious, monstrous alcohol in the aroma is the first feature noted. Roasty malts, watery and somewhat medicinal chocolate and a pleasant grassy hop bouquet round things out. Flavor is very roasty and has the feel of an imperial stout. The back end is coated with cereal graininess and fruity, grassy hops. Massively nutty and mildly roasty in a long finish. Hops linger comparative to hammering back a fresh double IPA. Strange all around. It feels like bits of peanuts are stuck in my teeth. This beer has its moments but I found it relatively unpleasant at times as well. Palate was very full and balanced.
This was the best black and tan I’ve had but it still wasn’t a great beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Courtesy Degarth. Dark black with a tan head. First whiff provides an interesting mix of roasted malt and hop aromas, but the roast aromas were stronger. After a few minutes, the hop aroma was pretty much gone. Cocoa aromas as well. Moderately thick mouthfeel. Roast is up front in the taste, and the finish has a subdued hoppiness to it. Tasted hot for a 7.6% beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Courtesy Degarth. Pours jet black, with a quickly diminishing light brown head. On the first whiff I got big hops and then not much shortly after that for some reason. Roasty malts, and coffee are present once you get past the hops. The taste is more of a stout than an IPA. I dont really get much hops in the taste and it issupposed to be 2/3 IPA. Interesting. Still it was very good. Taste is more coffee, malts, and light chocolate. Get some hops in the finish. Still pretty good.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark clear brown color with a big frothy and long lasting tan head. Aroma of resinous hops with a little roasted malt in the background. Flavor starts with resinous hops, plenty of roasted malts in the middle, and finishes with bitter hoppy roastiness. Really good and drinkable too.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured pretty dark black for not being a stout. Had a descent size tan head. Aroma was a great balance of citrus hops and some of the roastiness from the stout. At the beginning this tasted more like a stout a started to develop more of the IPA characteristics towards the end. For being 7.6% i cant taste the alcohol at all and this doesnt seem all that sweet either. Pretty great beer. Id say go maybe 40/60 and this would be perfect.
