Our IPA and Stout converge for a really great flavor combination to create a rich and robust black & tan. The assertive hoppy character of our Hoppin to Heaven IPA is perfectly complimented by the intense deep roasted flavor of our BORIS Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Two great tastes that taste even better together.

Bottle from Capone’s. This one is a true mixture of heavyweights. The color is mahogany with 1-finger khaki head. Aroma of roasty malt, chocoff, molasses, big hops. The aroma is very much like FFF Alpha Klaus. The taste is roasty dark malty, with a big hop bill, , some chocoff, molasses, and peppery notes. Rather dense and complex palate that retains a smoothness. This one is great.

Bottle forcibly opened from nolankowal at C-Bus 6: Pours a nice dark brown to black with a dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and some earthy hops, a roastiness in there as well. Flavor, roasted bitterness, some earthy notes, chocolate and coffee. Pretty nice brew.

Now this is my idea of a black & tan, Hoppin’ to Heaven I.P.A. and B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher! (<a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=1 and I once made a monster black & tan using Dogfish Head’s <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/dogfish-head-120 Minute IPA and <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/dogfish-hewad-wo Wide Stout 2002 (23%), but this comes in a solid second even though it’s not even half as strong. It’s about the taste.) From the pour you’d think you had an Imperial Stout in your glass, a thick, nearly black dark brown with a hefty dark tan head... but the nose tells you differently. Beneath it all are rich roasted malts and barley, bittersweet chocolate, cold coffee, and dark caramel. But it’s covered with sharp scents of pine and grapefruit and citric zest. Quite thick and smooth to drink - silky, almost. The flavor is a superb blending of Imperial Stout and IPA. The bottle doesn’t state the percentage of the split, but it seems like the stout wins out. Strong robust roasted malt flavors head-to-head with and underlying caramel sweetness and a healthy hop bitterness... a little something for everyone. I’ve yet to try the B.O.R.I.S., but given the quality of this drink and the Hoppin’ to Heaven I.P.A., it won’t be in my cellar too much longer. Two thumbs up!

Bottle from Craig. Thanks. Pours out a dark brown color without much of a head at all. Smell is rich and sweet, with some chocolate and coffee notes. Some nice hoppy smells as well from the IPA that was mixed in. Taste is sweet and rich, without much of a bite or kick. Chocolate, coffee, and hops are predominate in the beer. Not a bad beer, certainly much better than the belgian they make.

This beer was shared with ross, thanks. It pours out a brown with a fairly thick head tan head. The aroma of this brew is hoppy and light pine with some deeper grain smells. The taste is great, all the deep roasted malts you would want but a nice crisp smack in the mouth of hops. Really nice brew.

22 oz. bottle via trade with OhioDad - Pours a light brown color with a one finger thick light tan head. Very light spotty lacing. Aroma is floral hops, light citrus, and light toasted malt. Kinda nice. Flavor is lightly roasted malt with nice hop bite. Nice balance. Medium body. Slight lingering bitter roasted after taste. A nice beer. Thanks Scott.

Bottle from trade with RagallachMC. Pours black as a stout with a medium yellow tan head. Nose is very applealing--a very nice balance between the roasted malts, and mocha aromas of the stout, and the floral and piney aromas of the hops. Flavor is equally well balanced. Have yet to try the BORIS, but this is very tasty in its own right. Medium to heavy mouthfeel for the style with a nice bitter finish. Enjoyable and one I’d like to drink again. Thanks again, Paul!

very impressive. we thought this was just another crappy beer in a cool bottle when we got it in medina, ohio over christmas, but while we were checking out a very knowledgable worker let us know that one of the brewers from thirsty dog went out and made his own brewing company and hoppin frog was born. and thus, we were interested. the flavor was mainly that of the stout with some oatmeal, some coffee, some chocolate although it also had some hints of hoppiness to it. intense but i bet the other brews from these guys probably rock. can’t wait to have more...

Bottle thanks to OhioDad! I was looking forward to this one after enjoying the IPA and BORIS the last couple nights. Poured a translucent coppery-garnet with a short-lived beige head. The aroma found hefty pine notes upfront paired very well with more roasted oats than I found in BORIS... after that it needed time to air out before roasted coffee emerged. Flavor had deeply-roasted coffee backing with pervasive pine and citrus bitterness... sweet chocolate and burnt oats on the back half. Higher bitterness throughout and medium-bodied... long, bitter roasted finish. Enjoyed it! Thanks Scott!
