A bit of sweetness in the aroma. Some roasted notes too. First sip hits with a blast of oyster flavor that slowly fades into some BBQ notes. Very smooth. Maltajo (122), TARRYTOWN, New York, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 6, 2010 650mL bottle from DK tasted up against the barrel-aged version. Both were tasty, but the regular version was the winner of this tasting for me. Pours black with a small beige head. Strong aroma of chocolate and fruity hops. Body is thicker than the barrel-aged version with coffee, liquorice, oak, vanilla and some mild smoke. Finish is lots of bitter hops, and bit too long for my liking. gator2683 (146), Anchorage, Alaska, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 2, 2010 Now this is what I am talking about from a RIS. I can’t tell you how many times I am let down. Too often I feel like a 18 year old college virgin at his first frat party getting frisky with a chick only to reach down her pants and come up with a handfull. This one was creamy smooth, wonderful roasted malts, caramel, dark dried fruits, coffee, chocolate, the whole boat. Flavor came together so nicely, exactly what I was hoping for so many other times with highly rated RIS (I’m talking to you DL). This was the wonderful flavors without the cloying sweetness. Thanks Hoppin’ Frog! jcos (108), Maryland, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 1, 2010 Sample poured from a bottle at Cincy Beerfest. Looks like motor-oil on the pour, but more dark brown than black. Almost no head, but the little bit of bubbling is tan. Served too cold, unfortunately. Aroma of roasted malts, earthy hops, smoke, milk chocolate, a little coffee, and campfire wood. Flavor is also roasty, with more hops than I expected, notes of chocolate, smoked wood, and subtle dark fruits. Full-bodied, with an oily texture. Roasty finish. I will be trying this again soon next to its barrel-aged brother and at a warmer temperature. Still, I enjoyed this a lot. chrisv10 (437), Denmark
