4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
660ml bottle. Pitch black color. Small brown head, unfortunately disappears rather quickly. Coffe, roast, sweet, malty aroma. Coffee, roast, oranges, hops, citrus in flavor. Long lasting roast in aftertaste. Good one!

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
I really wanted to like this one. I had saved the big bottle for a few nights until two friends could join me for a tasting. It poured deep rich black and was beautiful, but that’s about where it ended for me. Perhaps I just got a bad bottle. Bitter chocolate needs some sweetness to bring out the flavor, but there was none in this beer. It was just flat with no outstanding qualities. Imperial stouts are my favorites usually, but not this night. One of my friends wouldn’t even finish his. I’d like to try this again some day, but at $10 a bottle, there are so many others to try first.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
660ml bottle (Pudel, Tallinn)
Nice roast, a bit cocoa powdery. Full smooth palate, softly carbonated, a little sweet. Black, couldn’t get much of a head at all. Great chocolatey body, smooth sweet, and almost slimy, but not quite. The bottom of the bottle had more vanilla, but deep down this is just a classic smooth soft roast imperial stout, nothing fancy, nothing gimicky. Covers the 9.4% well, very drinkable. Later the aroma loses the cocoa powder, and fills out nicely - mellow and roasty.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from Wegmans Leesburg. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Really roasty and malty on the nose. Has kind of a silky mouthfeell. Somewhat sweet but thinner on the tongue than I expected. Lingers a bit and hides its alcohol well. Solid for style.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: viscous, inky black, with a smattering of purplish-brown bubbles and vinous, syrupy legs. Aroma: black licorice, whiskey, chocolate, coffee, prunes, green nyquil. Taste: licorice and chocolate most prominent, with roasty espresso, wood (oak), some resinous pine and dark fruits. Finish: thick, chewy palate with lingering notes of slightly harsh black licorice, molasses, chicory, and chocolate. Notes: A big, bad bastard of a beer. Huge flavor and so thick you could almost eat it with a spoon. Not quite as boozy as expected based on the appearance and aroma. Only down note for me was that the black licorice character seemed excessive, even for an RIS.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted at 2013 Dayton Alefest- the name attracted me but i love this beer ! A thick stout that is almost chewy. A dry chocolate taste that could be enjoyed in a full glass unlike other chocolate porters.

Black/tan head. Thick and oily. Roasty, chocolaty, sweetness, some booziness. Very smooth. Really liked this one.

Strong coffee notes. Deep, rich palate. Chocolate bourbon. Strong alcohol content will curl your toes.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Wow, what a beer.
Super thick and black, with a beige light somewhere.
Strong aromas of coffee and wood...some vanilla and coffee in taste with a very sticky aftertaste. Very nice beer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Ap: Pours out thick as oil, with no head at all - just a few bubbles that quickly withered away to nothing.
Ar: Mild licorice, dates, coffee, chocolate, and a tinge of oatmeal.
T: No alcohol detected. Very well balanced with notes of cocoa, dark fruit (prunes?), and toasted bread.
P: Carbonation level is just about perfect for this style. Sure, this brew is a bit syrupy, but that is appropriate. High grade motor oil!
O: For the style, it’s near perfection. The ABV is high, but not as high as many other RISs. With drinkability being relative to octane level - I could drink this all day!
