3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 31, 2009 Maudite glass: Barely chilled to room temp: Thick pour is black, with a small, tan, head that settles to a small ring. Mainly roasty, malted milk ball, tar, aroma with a little hop backing. Not much there but strong. Smooth, thick, texture and a little fizzy. Starts roasty, with a little chocolate. Following is more roasty, chocolate, flavors but seem a bit empty really.Little metallic here and there. Though hoppy could use more. Finish is smokey, roasty, and grainy. While being a mouth coating beer, this does seem to have a kind of empty flavor except the huge roastiness which becomes a bit harsh after half a glass. I can say I don’t get a hint of alcohol which is usually a complaint of mine, and the oats seem to really soften this up. Get’s better as it opens up,and while being ok,this just seems like a plain, big, stout.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
650 mL bottle. 2010 vintage. May have left it a bit too long. Black with not much head. Sweet, malt aroma has a little cocoa powder, maraschino cherries and soy sauce. Flavour is still nig, body is still creamy, but the carbonation has flattened out a bit. Have to try one fresher.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black. There is little head and the first pour, but it develops after the pour with lacing. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, and cocoa. It has a smooth, rich texture with flavors of coffee, chocolate, cocoa, and oats. The lively carbonation produces a tingling sensation with a bitter finish.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Opaque black color with no noticeable head to speak of. Aroma is sweet cocoa, reminiscent of baked brownies with cinnamon, raisins and Cuban coffee. Wonderful chocolate and coffee dark malt flavor upfront. Obvious warming alcohol feel. Complex yet smooth. Like drinking cold Mexican Hot Chocolate with a big boozy jolt. The smoothness comes from the oats. The complexity comes from the magic of the ingredients and craft of the Hoppin’ Frog Brewers. Well done.
