BossHossBikes (127), Tennessee, USA Jun 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours viscous and intensely opaque like black motor oil. Not a whole lot of head at the pour. After swirling the beer vigorously, I was able to get a thin coating of a nice dark brown head but it quickly faded. The aroma has roasty notes with sweet brown sugar and molasses. Lots of oats in the aroma as well. It has a very meaty bouquet. As the brew warms, soy notes become a little more noticeable. The brew is very viscous to the tongue. The initial Sweet molasses notes with some tangy dark fruits pave the way for a later blast of oatmeal and dark chocolate. A light bitterness is a nice complement to the oatmeal and chocolate flavours. As the bitterness becomes apparent, bold, yet not overpowering, roasted notes burst along side with it. This is such a huge beer.
timsilvia32 (252), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Oct 9, 2008 Black/brown pour with ruby tones. Barely present brown bubbles. Roasty aromas of malt, coffee, grains. Initial taste is roast malt, roasted oat and quite a bit of coffee. As it warms it mellows a bit and hits the mocha and port like flavors. Very smooth mouthfeel, not quite creamy. A big beer, full bodied for sure. Not over run with alcohol or bitterness. The oat sets this apart a bit from the typical RIS. If it was available to me other than mail order, would definetely buy again. Would like to see what some age does to this also. May have to make my way through Akron on the way home to Michigan. petermadsen (339), Vesterbronxxx, Denmark Oct 8, 2008 This is a big, smooth imperial stout, with a silky and mellow structure, that really sets it apart from others.
The aroma is filled with nice cocoa, coffee and some sweet, malty notes. The flavour is round and wonderfull with a perfect blend of coffee, hops, alcohol and some fruity notes. The oats rounds the whole thing off. Not very bitter.
A really nice beer! FunkyBrewster (150), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 8, 2008 Pours a jet black color with a light brown head that dissipates but leave a small froth. Aroma is dark roasted malt and chocolate with some brown sugar and molasses notes. Flavor starts off with some thick cocoa and sweet molasses flavors before opening up to some bitter but rich fig and oatmeal notes. The finish leaves some rich bitter espresso coffee flavors in the mouth. Extremely full body and very rich. This is a knock out through and through. Well done. Aubrey (2614), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 7, 2008 Very dark and mysterious; it even has that oily, yellowish residue on the insides of the glass. Mouthfeel was thick and chewy and full, with a silky softness and a nice carbonation level. This was one rich, sweet and roasty-toasty stout. Alcohol was hidden well yet warming. Notes of espresso, tar, chocolate, toffee and caramel. Sticky oil and a grassy hop bitterness linger on the tongue. Chewy and oaty in the finish. Rather wholesome and tasty stout. Rune (1811), Tromsø, Norway Oct 7, 2008 660ml bottle shared with Eva at Nørrebro Bryghus. A rusty light to an otherwise plain black, naked body. Very inviting, blended aroma of dark malts. Initial flavour of roasted oatmeal leading to the delicate taste of cocoa and milk chocolate before the smooth tartness of coffee and anise sets in. Strong, but yet tender in the mouth. Full bodied and well balanced. Another great beer from Hoppin’ Frog (Copenhagen, 20.09.2008).
