4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bomber into shaker; purchased at the Lakeview Binny’s. I love this beer. Like Southern Tier Chocolat this is smooth as silk and sweet for an impy, and fully delicious. Roasty chocolate and carob smell is rich and also very smooth. Low level of carbonation produced a short-lived fizzy head that fully disappears. A carob-heavy, almost fruity chocolate sweetness is full and balanced perfectly by the softness of the oat and roasted malts and a light bitterness of hops that’s the perfect counterpoint in the finish. If a more acclaimed brewer made this I bet it would score higher, but it’s hard to complain about an average above 4.1. Well-deserved.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black as a starless night. Very good head, especially for 9.4% alcohol. Retention is slightly below normal, as is lacing. The nose is rather subdued, chocolate and coffee are noted over a light alcohol base. As it warms, chocolate comes more forward as does vanilla, dark fruit and roast. Light full body with a creamy texture. Slightly above normal carbonation with effervescence in the middle and finish. The flavor profile is intense, complex, but is not well balanced. The alcohol is not hidden well enough. It begins with a rush of coffee that quickly yields to a rich dark chocolate with notes of vanilla. A bit of effervescence in the middle brings out the mild roast and hop bitterness. The bitterness is citric in nature and fades into light dark fruit, mostly fig, notes with a bit of char and smoke. Throughout alcohol is in the background, but as the flavors fade in the finish, it predominates. Take the alcohol content down a bit, and this becomes outstanding. As is, it’s very good.

bottle @ Party Town /Florence KY --- Opaque black with a brown rim head, lots of dots of lace. Taste is sweet syrupy caramel malt with chewy oatmeal that moves smoothly through the palate to a finish that has only a hint of hops. Big,...no doubt, but thick as motor oil, and heavy in the stomach.

Bottle pour split at a tasting event. Pours jet black with a fading brown head. Boozy roasted malt, cookie like aroma. Super graham cracker like flavor, and super smooth. Slightly off putting aroma, but the beer tasted amazing. Thick body, and a ton of flavor. Solid beer. Loved it.
