COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smooth malt Flavors of this Belgian-style abbey ale are complimented by traditional imported ingredients. A slightly spicy and complex flavor makes this European celebration-style beer unique and refreshing.

Bottle pours into a tulip amber with a thin whitish head. Aromas are malt and dark fruit, sweet. Taste is similar with dark fruits and not much else. Alcohol is well hidden but comes through on the back end with some warmth. Overall, not bad, straight forward.

Bottled@The 2nd ES/CS Beer Tasting. (thanks K.K.!). Reddish orange colour with a mediumsized foamy off-white head. Aroma is quite much a Belgian tripel meeting toffee and American hops. Flavour is being similar, in a nice balanced. Hides the ABV really well, making this a pleasant and refreshing strong ABV beer.

Bottle thanks to StFun! Light pumpkin colored pour, very little head and a vegetal and a little spice aroma. Flavor has plenty of malt, sweet honey, spicy clove and finished with a few off flavors. I can tell this was probably better fresh, but still a decent beer even though it’s past its prime.

Well, this is a retired brew so it has obviously been on the shelves for a while and thus past its prime and then some. I don’t think it’s fair that my review might reflect negatively on Hoppin’ Frog because I think they are a very fine brewery indeed but I still think the lovely people here at RateBeer deserve a bit of a warning. First off, this gushed. It wasn’t bad but open it over the sink. As gushers often do it pours w/ a huge head that diminishes to nothing rather quickly. The nose is of tart apples and toffee w/ some sherry-like oxidized notes, actually not too bad. A lot of times gushers have no carbonation as they apparently release all their carbonation in the initial onslaught of uncontrolled bubbling but this is overcarbanated in addition to being rather strangely sticky and overly sweet. The flavor, like the nose, is sort of a muddle of oxidized flavors. It is not terrible but kind of weird. While this may have been a fine beer at some point, it is not anymore and I’d advise against purchase if you do happen across a bottle. Grab a bottle of the very excellent Hoppin’ to Heaven or BORIS the Crusher instead.

22 Oz. Bottle. Pours a nice auburn with a small off-white head, dissipating to nothing over some time. Aroma is sweet with caramel malt. marmalade and liqueur. Tastes sweet as well with a lot of honey, brown sugar, slight sweet potato flavor, and orange-cake. Finishes sweet and warming, flavor doesn’t really evolve into anything on the finish, it’s just a weaker version of what you just tasted. I do taste the alcohol. It has a 10.5 % alc. / vol. It is now "retired" I’m glad I have two bottles in Reserve.

rich reddish gold with barely any head. nose is spicy and phenolic. very thick mouthfeel and low carbonation for the style. mild hop bitterness before some fruity esters before more phenolic and perhaps DMS notes with a sour tang. very full mouthfeel due to high residual sweetness, both out of character for the style. This beer has been retired and I found it at a store, so it is likely far past its prime and likely infected, though that is somewhat forgiving of the flavor, a belgian ale should age well with proper bottling techniques. An undrinkable beer from a premier brewery in the area, likely an aberration, but very disappointing

aroma is general belgian spice and some caramel malts. touch of dubbel characteristics as well, some raisin and pit fruits fleeting. appearance is well polished ruby red, quite striking with little head and nearly zero lacing. flavor is gigantic phenols, amazing none showed in the aroma. after the trip to the dentist little survives besides more of the spice, coriander probably and a good nose of nuttiness to close. big warming booze, not necessarily hot on the palate but it makes its presence known later.

Bottle. Poured a clear medium orange color. The head was pretty limp. Just some soap bubbles. Spicy malt and a bit of clove in the nose. Medium bodied and very sweet, bordering on cloyingly sweet. Clove, orange liqueur, apricot, and sweet potato flavors. Warming alcohol effect in the stomach.

22oz bottle 1/28/10 (Binny’s Naperville)-42° in Tulup-Pours a clear orangish amber with a small white ring for a head. Aroma of yeast, fruits, caramel, and hops. Taste of yeast, sweetness, fruits, bread, and sugars. This medium to full bodied brew is not too bad. A bit sweet but otherwise a nice brew. Hides the ABV pretty good.

pours amber, light off-white head. aroma and flavor, pungent dark fruits, grainy and yeasty, with lingering grainy elements. Not really what I was expecting when reading the bottle description. doughy malty finish.
