Imperial/Double Black IPA
An uncivilized amount of american hop spicyness along with a chocolaty mix of dark roasted flavors.

22 oz. bottle shared by Jeremy. Pours a vary dark brown color with a small beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, black coffee, a splash of chocolate, but is more about the earthy and resiny hops. The flavor has a nice blend of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee with the earthy, spicy and resiny hops. This definitely fits the definition of a double black ipa. Pretty drinkable, hiding the abv well.

22oz bomber from Herchick poured into a tulip. Thanks Bob! Pours black with a thin ring of dark tan head. Almost looks like a porter. Aroma is malt oriented - Mainly chocolate and coffee but with a good dose of spicy hops. Taste is light bitter. Starts off with citrus and pine hop bitterness but ends with a wallop of dark roasty chocolate. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Soft carbonation and a long finish. Overall, awesome. I think I could drink this everyday!

UPDATED: APR 28, 2014 Bottle. Aroma is very chocolatey and pretty damn hoppy. I get some coffee, and some piney / grassy notes. Palate is very smooth, finishing a little dry. Flavor really brings out the chocolate, but it finishes with a hoppy bite.

Poured from a bomber to a pint glass. Appearance is a brown/black that’s fairly translucent with a greyish shear of foam. Nice retention. Aroma is somewhat briny and earthy in its hop profile. Its more piney bitter than any other. Tastes a little roasty on top of that briny piney earthy bitterness. Hefty body. Another good beer from Hoppin Frog.

This particular black IPA was not my cup of tea but is still a fine beer. It wasn’t difficult to finish off the bottle despite it being filling and a little heavy by the end. Don’t let this one sit around - drink it fresh and enjoy a superb experiment.

Aroma / Appearance - The inky black fluid pour clings to the sides of the glass. A billowing musty brown head looks like a pile of dead leaves that have crumbled into dust. Anise, chocolate, spruce, and resin spark the inner hophead.

Flavor / Palate - The resin manifests itself immediately in the form of a piney bite. Dark high quality chocolate and anise rise up before a soft feel of ethanol infuses the palate in warmth. The last experience is of a bitter finish that sticks on the back of the throat. I can’t wait to try the new Goose Juice and see if Hoppin’ Frog can carry their momentum to another gem.

Fresh bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Holy crap this was good. Poured like a full-on porter including a big, foamy khaki head. Big resiny, hop aroma and some darker malt too. Huge flavor that starts with the bitter hops then you get a hint of the chocolate. Almost 9 ABV and you can’t tell. Very well done.

Pours a murky, muddy dark brown with some milk chocolate highlights when held up to the light. It almost appears gritty. A careful pour results into a modest two finger creamy tan head with moderate lacing. Not the world’s prettiest beer but that’s not the point. This is one of those beers that captures your attention right away based on the wafting aromas present during the initial pour. It’s one of the most complex noses I’ve come across. Waves of subtle pine interplay with a more complex aroma of a bright, acidic coffee similar to a fine Kenyan AA. This is followed by a roasty caramel and just a hint of tobacco. Simply amazing! After experiencing the aroma, I take my first sip with great anticipation….a damn it doesn’t let me down! The first thing I detect is a smooth milk chocolate. The milk chocolate sweetness exits upon the first bitter bite of those beautiful hops. The hops just sit there mid palate begging to stay a few seconds longer. Then comes the big finish of roasty coffee and subtle smokiness, which completely dominate the palate until the next sip. Mouthfeel is dead on for this style. A soft level of carbonation plays perfectly into a creamy and slightly sticky mouthfeel. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about this beer. I’ve had 2-3 other black IPAs and was left with the thought that maybe it’s just not my style. Then the Heathen came into my life. The aroma and taste are so complex I could see having a slightly different experience with each bottle. Another world-class offering from Hoppin’ Frog. )

Bottle: The aroma consists of big pine notes, dark chocolate, black licorice, and a hint of grapefruit. It pours a dark brown with some orange highlights and a small beige head. The flavor starts with a quick dose chocolate and caramel. The finish has some pine and vanilla. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

Bottle. Super hoppy nose. Pours a very dark brown, but not quite black. The taste is nice and smooth, exactly what I expect from a black iipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
