Rich malty flavors of caramelized and toasted grains dominate this robust Scotch ale. A hint of rye adds a crisp, scotch-like, old-world beer character, reminiscent of a simpler life from centuries ago. It’s a wee-bit heavy.

Bottle. Body-looks like still iced tea. Taste-tea, caramel, high CO2 even though there doesn’t appear to be any bubbles, light cigar, some smoke.

Bottle. Thanks Matt! Rich fully malty beer. Rather sweet but not unbalanced. Caramel, burnt sugar, toasted. Moreish. Burnt sugar but dry in the finish.

Tap @ Bishops Arms Hornsgatan. Almost clear amber with a medium size lacing head. Sweet caramel and pine aroma. Mild carbonated and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Great dark sugar and caramel, with pine and oak taste in good balance. Woody smooth finish.

Bottle from Delirium Hoppy Loft. Loose, irregular, pale greyish white head stabilizing on the edges, colour is a warm orangey ’rust-brown’ with lively sparkling, hazy, with small flakes of protein everywhere. Weird aroma of ketjap, fresh ginger, strong and even somewhat ’ironish’ rosehip tea, caramel, overripe grapefruit, whisky, milk chocolate, more subtle hints of balsamic vinegar, peanuts, salted tomato, old-fashioned brown cough syrup with a lot of sugar, sourish-spicy wet rye bread, parquet varnish- or even nail polish-like phenols, marmelade, strawberry, cloves. Sweet onset, restrained fruitiness of strawberry, orange and overripe pear with candi sugar, surrounded by a persisting but subtle sourish edge, medium carbo, drying a bit on the tongue but becoming a lot softer and even almost flat in the end, supple but rather thin mouthfeel (probably already thinned by age), very caramelly and a bit nutty with a toasted edge in the end, as expected from a wee heavy. Finishes malty, sweet and still candyish, cloying a little bit, with herbal, tea- and leaf-like hops residing in the background but providing basic structure, as well as quite a big dosis of retronasal phenols (and lightly spicy, rosehip like aromas) and warming, even very slightly burning alcohol. This was probably a good beer when young, but surely this bottle hasn’t been kept in the best of circumstances and is too old now to properly present itself. I expected a lot more from this, seen my previous positive experiences with this brewery, in particular the barrel aged version of the very same beer. Bit of a downer, actually, but I have no other choice at the moment than to rate it the way I receive it, which is too old, too thin as a result (especially for this particular style) and too phenolic.

Bomber. Rich caramel malt aroma with toasted grains and a bit of smoke. Pours caramel colored with a thin tan head with poor retention and good lacing. Starts with rich caramel sweetness with some toasted malt. Finishes smooth with the caramel sweetness as well as some toffee with a bit of smoke. Nice scotch ale.
