COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rich malty flavors of caramelized and toasted grains dominate this robust Scotch ale. A hint of rye adds a crisp, scotch-like, old-world beer character, reminiscent of a simpler life from centuries ago. It’s a wee-bit heavy.

Bottle. This is not what I expected at all. First sign that something was off was the bubblegummy banana yeast in the nose. Had to check the bottle... was this some sort of Belgian-Scottish blend? No. Oops. Through the banana, toasted caramel malt is present in the nose as well as some actual caramel. Flavor is a little sticky, sweet and a tad unbalanced. Tastes syrupy, and not very carbonated... almost more toward a cider than a beer. Finishes with a hint of banana over a very weak bitterness. Is something wrong here? I didn’t taste the 8.2%.

"Nice mix of sweet and peat! Toffee like sweetness, but light, with gentle hopping and a kiss of smoke that goes very well. Very smooth though medium to full bodied on the palate."

Pours murky reddish brown with a tiny ring of beige foam. Smells of caramel, hints of spice, touch of toast. Taste is caramel, very subtle hint of spice. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Hoppin’ Frog Outta Kilter Wee Heavy Scotch Red Ale finishes with a short sweetness.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2014 Tap. Pours a bit hazy amber with white head that disappears. Aroma is bready, slightly toasted malt, sweet, marmalade fruity. Taste is heavy sweet, malt, caramel and a bit boozy. Mouth-feel is sugary and sticky. Someway boring,

Bomber pours a hazy dark reddish amber with a substantial lingering tight off-white head and lots of lacing. Aroma has rye bread, dark fruits, and caramel. Taste is on the sweet side without much of any hop presence. It has an old-world flavor not often found among American breweries. Body is medium to full with average carbonation.. Alcohol is well hidden. I expected this to be heavier on the malts, but it was well worth trying, although it’s not over the top, like some of this breweries others.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, light herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, apple, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, light herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice scotch ale. Good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt, yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. Really needed to be a bit bolder on malt flavors, but still a nicely enjoyable offering.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, with extensive lacing, over a clear dark amber copper SRM 17) body.....nose is light raisin, plum, from the malts, no hop aroma, slight esters, balance to the malts.....taste is slightly sweet, with plum, raisin tones, hits of treacle, no hops, with no bitterness on the finish....mouth feel, body light of medium, sticky, alcohol warmth present, slight tingle from the carbonation. This is a light "Wee Heavy". The malt complexity and intensity is low for the style and needs a great deal more oomph. It does not taste bad, it just is not a particularly good example of the style.
