bomber. Pours very dark with not much of a head. The aroma is very creamy with suggestions of milk chocolate, vanilla wafers, a bit of coffee, and chocolate-covered almonds. Flavor is much the same, it kind of reminds me of a sweeter English style porter but with a very full body. It’s nutty and chocolaty all around with a creamy finish that flirts with fruity tones. This is incredibly drinkable and hearty.

22oz bottle, no date from puddintane and the Mystery Swap 3.0, thanks! Pretty well black--only a glimmer of ruby brown was noted--with a one finger tan head, fading to a 1/4" and staying after a minute. Milk chocolate, brown sugar, and some vanilla are up front (the chocolate dominating), some roast and light spicy hops in the background. Flavor had a fair amount more sweetness than I would’ve expected, though not really a big surprise from the aroma. Still lots of milk chocolate (and malted milk balls) dominating with caramel and brown sugar notes. The finish is dark chocolate and roasted malt bitterness, peaking at a 3 or so. Medium body with light to moderate carbonation. Very nice porter.

Bomber. The body was perfectly black with a light tan head. The aroma was strong milk chocolate with some bread crust. There was also some cantalop. The taste has light coffee and bread crust. There is also some light milk chocolate.

Bottle. Dark pour with a mild brown head. Has a slight smoky flavor that accents roasted malts. This is a good porter but not outstanding.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2008 Black pour with very little head. Smoky caramel malts with a satisfying full feel. Nice beer. Will try again. Update. Alefest sample filtered through coffee beans. If they bottled this my rating would be 9-3-9-4-18. Highly recommended.

Pours a very dark mahogany brown color with a quickly dissipating, khaki colored head. Sticky, honeycomb lacing coat the glass well. The aroma shows notes of bitter chocolate, powdered sugar, roasted caramel, and lactose. There’s a good dose of fig in there as well, which was a surprising twist. Flavors show an interesting contrast between bitter roast and sweet cream. The sharp edge of scorched caramel and baker’s chocolate is softened considerably by cream, mocha, and sweet dark fruits. As advertised, the mouthfeel is quite silky, but also just a hair on the thin side. It feels sort of "Belgian" to me for some reason, probably the fruit. This is a very interesting beer, and quite enjoyable to boot.

22oz bottle from WLV Liquors. Pours a dark black with a creamy tan head. Cocoa and bakers chocolate are strong and inviting aromas. Carbonation is almost spritzy with a creamy texture. Chocolate and burnt malt flavors are slightly sweet. Finishes with the bakers chocolate and cola. Enjoyable beer.

Stine (1547) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 9, 2008
Ashy black pour producing a wispy, thin brown head immediately resigning itself. Raspberry jam, dried caramel, and graham cracker stale malt aroma; layers are thick and rich but presented mostly with reservation. Soft, dark vinous flavor; somewhat musty, stale wet maltiness seeming pervasive, beneath a sharp sweetness of black coffee thick with sugar, but no cream. Somewhat fudgy, but always light in impression. Medium soft body; very low carbonation; unimposing and generous texture. Short, distantly sweet, smooth cocoa finish. Executed well, though it seems a bit old even as it’s only been in the bottle for several months. Thanks Kristine!

22oz bottle. Aroma: Chocolate, caramel, light coffee, pine, and some sweet maltiness. Appearance: Dark brown in color with some small reddish-brown highlights. Khaki colored head was full and creamy with great retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Dark roasted malt with notes of smoke, coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Chocolate comes more forward as it warms. Some light piney and minty hop notes into the finish. Medium-light bitterness and a touch of sourness into the finish. Palate: Medium bodied and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Overall: Nice and drinkable porter. Smooth, flavorful, and really pleasant.

Cornfield (5473) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - JUN 2, 2008
This is almost black in the glass, so dark is the brownness of the body. You can see some mahohany around the edges. The slender tan head doesn’t last too long and it leaves little of any lace. The aroma has very dark caramel, roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and anise. So does the flavor, its creamy body making it slide down easily. The finish has a light lactic sourness to it, but not so strong as to detract from the overall experience. Nice.
