COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
HMB is based on the English-style ales. Three types of malt are used: pale, crystal and chocolate. Pale malt is predominant, with crystal malt added for extra body and malt-sweetness, and chocolate malt giving a burst of coffee bitterness. English Fuggles and Goldings hops are used. HMB Ale has a brown colour, is cloudy in appearance, with low carbonation. It is bottle-conditioned.

In the bottle purchased from the 3 Sisters Bottle shop. Pours dark brown with a poofy thick white head. Diminishes quick. Does not have much aroma. Pretty mild. Nuts perhaps? Medium malty body, but not such a good beer. Slightly sweet. Some fruit, mild prunes perhaps? At warming, caramel and a bit tart.

12 Mar 06 - Pronounced choc malt and a stale hop aroma. Brown colour, ok head and reasonable lacing. Simple choc malt flavour. A little bit thin, with a light bitterness and finishs with a roastiness.

Quite dark cloudy with some yeasty chunks around the bottom. Aroma is of stale hops, and some nice chocolate. Mouthfull is a little thin, but the beer shows some nice roasty flavours. Minimal hoppines and weak finish. Not too bad.

Dark copper (between a bitter and brown ale I suppose), clear with a nice yellow head. Chocolate milkshake and grainy cocoa dominate. Gets pretty watery mid-palate with some soda water flavour but finishes pretty well with a clean hoppiness and subtle dark malts. A less classy, but more organic (not literally!) version of Mike’s Mild, but ultimately it is a bit watery. Good to see they’ve sorted out whatever issues they were having.

Received a gift pack as a Christmas present. Disappointed by not living up to its marketing promise - particularly the brewery’s great name. The brewers need to go back to the drawing board with a view to brewing a more flavoursome ale.

Murky grey brown with a tiny very short lasting head. Big band aid charcoal malt and hint of vegemite yeast aroma. Medium thin sticky flat generic soft drink like palate. Flavour, . . . . no real flavours. Tastes slightly cloying sweet malt, more bandaid and some soft sourness. It’s hard to tell if this bottle is off or it was meant to be really made this way. Couldn’t finish it.

Not a great brew, but it wasn’t particularly bad either. Fat malty beer with a definite coffee flavour, some chocolate too. Not very bold but it’s OK.

A much better beer than their dreadful American wheat. Light brown, moderate head. Some caramel and juicy fruit in the aroma. Fairly lean in the body. Lots of caramel malt in the flavour, plus chocolate notes. A simple beer but fairly well made. (Bottle, Australian Beer Festival Oct 05)
