Our Alligator Ale is a rich mahogany colored ale with a surprisingly smooth finish. This beer is perfectly balanced with flavors of dark malts and hops.

About 4 oz. served into a tasting glass. From notes. A: Pours a dark brown color with a well-retaining khaki film. This one looks pretty good, even in such a dinky serving size. S: Itís got roasted malts...and thatís it. Pretty generic. T: Roastiness builds to an acidic, mildly watery finish. Meh. M: Like everything else Iíve had here, itís light and easy to drink. O: This wasnít very good. Maybe I let it get too warm? Wouldnít get again.

This will go down in history as the best beer I?ve had tonight, at this brewpub. Almost three times as good as the worst beer I?ve had on tap at the Alexandria brewpub tonight. Some roast, light caramel and even a hint of dark chocolate. Pours dark brown with OK head and lacing.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2014 Flight 1/22/09 (Tampa)-Pours a ruby brown with a small head. Aroma of caramel, malt, toffee, and slight hops. Taste of the same with a bit of nut on the back end. This medium bodied brew was pretty well balanced and not bad.

Burnished copper brown pour with ruby highlights. Yellow tan head. Grass/husky nose, nice grain character and roast with notes of coffee and cacao. Light sweetness and well balanced. Enjoyed this one too.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a large creamy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of roasted malts and a bitter hop finish. The taste is chocolate, nuts, roasted malts and faint hops. Thin bodied, just like all their beers. The best of the 6 I tried, but thatís not saying much.

On tap @ Hops Golden. Dark red/brown appearance with a tan head. Slight roasty dark malty nose but smells watery like all the others. A touch nutty, lightly roasty dark malty flavor. The best I had at hops but thatís like getting the silver medal in the special olympics.

On tap at the Alexandria, Virginia location. Pours a moderate shade of brown with a thin off-white head plus a bit of a cap and collar as it settles. The nose doesnít start out too bad. Thereís some chocolate and roast character before a metallic presence starts to overwhelm all but the chocolate. The taste is similar. It starts out with a decent enough chocolate malt presence before being hit hard with a fairly-harsh metallic presence. Mouthfeel is overwhelmed by this. Probably the best beer I had at Hops, though it still was jot very good. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 12-20-2010
