3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ElGaucho (1862) - Minnetonka, USA - JUN 22, 2002
Eden Prairie, MN location: Similar to the Thoroughbred Red, no aroma. Hops must not brew their beers for that feature. Deep, dark red color with small bubble head and pretty good retention. Roasted malt undertones, strong caramel flavor and medium alcohol aftertaste. A good beer that would be even better with a stronger dose of hops. This is Hops’ best beer, although I hope to run across their Big Skeeter Pale Ale when it is ’in season.’
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Drake (5231) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - MAY 2, 2012
Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear dark reddish brown color with a large creamy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of roasted malts and a bitter hop finish. The taste is chocolate, nuts, roasted malts and faint hops. Thin bodied, just like all their beers. The best of the 6 I tried, but that’s not saying much.

On tap @ Hops Golden. Dark red/brown appearance with a tan head. Slight roasty dark malty nose but smells watery like all the others. A touch nutty, lightly roasty dark malty flavor. The best I had at hops but that’s like getting the silver medal in the special olympics.
1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 6/20 Thorpe429 (3823) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 20, 2011
On tap at the Alexandria, Virginia location.
Pours a moderate shade of brown with a thin off-white head plus a bit of a cap and collar as it settles. The nose doesn’t start out too bad. There’s some chocolate and roast character before a metallic presence starts to overwhelm all but the chocolate. The taste is similar. It starts out with a decent enough chocolate malt presence before being hit hard with a fairly-harsh metallic presence. Mouthfeel is overwhelmed by this. Probably the best beer I had at Hops, though it still was jot very good.

Draft at Hops Grillhouse & Brewery, Alexandria. Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized dark tan head. Aroma was toasted malts, touch of chocolate malts. Flavor was roasted malts, like a thin nutty porter. Was probably the best of the bunch I had.

On tap at Hops Golden Colorado poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of cocoa, carmel and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, cocoa, earthiness and a hint of fruiottiness with a smooth carmel finish.

Mahogany pour, with sparse lace. Malty, vinous notes to the nose with faint coffee. Flavors are of coffee and dark malts. Pleasant coffee finish. Soft carbonation and a medium palate make for a smooth pull. My favorite of their stock selections, but in comparison..... what does that say?

The best thing on the Hops sampler. Black with a tan head. Aroma was sweet, roast, caramel and alcohol. Flavor is the same with less roast and more cereal.
