On tap at Hops & Barley, Friederichshain on 30th September 2012. Hazy copper with declining white foam and initial lacing. Richly hoppy and yeasty aroma, like an APA. Hoppy and fruity in-mouth, with some delicate cheesy notes. Grapefruit in a fruity finish with subtle bitterness. Light mouthfeel and medium body. The best beer I drank on this visit to Germany and WELL WORTHY OF BECOMING MY THOUSANDTH RATING ON RATEBEER!!!!!

11,10,10,11,-,10 - 10,26 - 13/8/12

Draught at the brewpub. Caramelly and slightly piney hop aroma. Cloudy amber colour. Small white head. The flavour is a little caramelly like the aroma, but not so piney. OK to begin with, but fades out with a rather disappointing rough bitterness.

First of all, I’m pretty sure this is an Amber lager, not an Amber ale. The brewer did say it was bottom fermented. I’ll rate it anyway under this listing. Pours a bright red, with substantial off-white head and noticeable carbonation. Nose is bright with hops of grassy notes. Palate is very nice, and I disagree with the first reviewer and think that this beer (especially for a lager) has a lot of body and depth. Flavor is excellent: malty sweetness with doughy notes up front followed by a nice Cascade bitterness and piney flavor in conclusion. This is a very well-crafted beer that is an excellent matching of German beer tradition (the nice body and malty sweetness of the lager) and American hops. Hops and Barley is making damn good beer in Berlin and this is the best I’ve had there.

On tap at the brewpub. Hazy amber colour. Fruity hop aroma. A bit harsh bitterness, a slight hint of metal. Lacking the body for the style. Drinkable.
