On tap. Hazy, deep amber golden with a small, white head leaving a little lacing. Somewhat strange bonbon-like nose. Medium body, a little yeast and phenols and then again these sweet bonbon accents. None of the nomal characteristics of a Hefe: banana, cloves and citrus. No bitterness. Basically a failed attempt at a Hefe. 070109

On tap at the brewpub. Cloudy orange colour with a good head. Banana nose, some spiciness that bevome more pronounced in the mouth. The spices lends balancing bitterness to the flavours Medium body, a bit fizzy Very nice and quite typical.

Tap at the brewpub, Berlin. Pours a mid hazy yellow-gold with a fine, white head. Nice banana, wheat, yeast and vanilla frosting aroma. Medium sweet flavor, bready wheat, candi sugar, some hay. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with white bread, some doughy yeast, sweet banana. Very solid.

On draft at the brewery. Hazy, golden orange body with a diminishing white head. Nice clove and vanilla in the nose. Bigger clove flavor supported by more vanilla. Banana comes through fairly strong, too, although after the spicier flavors. Bready malt and the yeast adds some doughiness. Light body with active carbonation. Relatively dry, but malty and delicious with lingering phenols. Tasty hefeweizen!

Draught at the pub. Hazy golden with a super creamy, brilliantly white head. Mild hint of plastic in the nose; taste incorporates very heavy esters (banana dominant), to the detriment of the other side. Medium-full body is super creamy, which may be what I take away from this the most. Orange peel on the corner, maybe some light vanilla.

Hausbrauerei Hops & Barley, Berlin.

Beer No. 42 on my tour through Austria, Germany and Denmark.
On tap at Hops & Barley. Cloudy orange coloured, small white head, not so pleasant sourish nose. Sharp acidic fruity and quite sourish yeasty taste with notes of overripe banana near the end. Bad batch???

My Bottom Line :
Earthy, hoppy and clove-y, this Hefe Weizen deploys lots of character which makes it stand out above the crowd in a Weizen-happy country.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam tops the cloudy amber.
-The house character seems to also come from a touch of pediococcus-like funk, which actually appeared in their Pils as well.
-This is on the verge of being a Dunkel Weizen.
-The flavor profile is quite rich, with lots of wheat participating actively. It almost tastes like a Roggenbier at times.
-Banana esters are way under average for the style.

On tap at the brewpub.
