On draught at Hopworks. A perfect combination: Abominable Winter Ale and Bourbon barrels! Wait for it each year.

Hopworks Kentucky Christmas 7.8% 2014 version Served in a snifter it pours a beautiful orange-gold. The aroma is surprisingly bright citrus with mild barrel character. The taste is almost like a barrel-aged IPA as it starts with bright citrus notes, gives you some malt sweetness while the barrel oak and bourbon comes through in the finish/aftertaste. Very smooth drinking but not what any of us were expecting from a winter seasonal.

Rating #1307. 29.10.2014 - Tap Takeover @underground_edm. Pours a rich dark mahogany, and exudes bourbon barrel from the beginning.Medium heavy carbonation, mild alcohol warmth. ABV disguised by barrel notes, cocoa, vanilla. Extremely balanced, pleasant sweetness, smooth bitterness, crisp clean finish. Banjo-rific.

Draft - Sweet rich caramel notes and piny hops. Cloudy Amber with a decent beige head. Hoppy, citrus, caramel and a long sweet toffee finish. Nice hoppy red. Fruity sweetness from the barrels, nice.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a hazy orange with a small white head. Nose brings out spicy notes, bourbon barrels, and light herbal notes. Flavour is complex and cohesive, with smoky bourbon barrels, light spices and alcohol. The barrels shine bright here, finishing spicy and smoky. Good stuff.

2012 version on tap @ Chuck’s 85th. Pours murky dark golden with thin lacy white head. Aroma is a hint a malt, spicy hops, and big boozy whiskey. Taste is thin light caramel malt and malty whiskey. Most of the hops are obscured here. Love the barrel aging, and the whiskey, but much of the charm of abominable is lost here. Super thin body for the abv.

Hmmm. A tough one to rate for me. Pours a darkish copper color with a small white head. A huge bursting nose of heat and bourbon. Like a shot. The flavor is also a bit harsh for me, I like BA beers, but this has some solvent like flavors and huge heat, but also nice caramel, vanilla, wood, sweet sugary malts. Good overall. Very hot.

Had on draft at the brewery. The aroma is spicy, vanilla, woody. The flavor is dominated by the barrel, coconut, vanilla, toffee, big sweet malts. This is huge.

On tap at Beer Revolution. It pours a bright copper orange with an off white head. The aroma is awesome. Dried apricot, tropical fruit with huge caramel, whiskey, vanilla and wood. The flavor has peaches, papaya, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, alcohol and wood near the finish. Oily palate. Subdued carbonation really lets the flavors shine. Nice one.
