Light ruby color. Very light smell. Malty and drinkable for a barley wine, and well carbonated. Interesting brew.

3 oz. sample on tap at Brouwer’s Café for Hard Liver, pours light golden. Aroma of pine and citrus hops, light caramel – bitter notes dominate the nose. Flavour is hoppy with caramel, light fruits, light oaky and bourbon notes. Very nice.

Light coppery amber, white head leaving streaks of spidery lacing. Smells soapy and spicey and a touch dank, not a lot of sugars/malt noticable for a barley wine. Light biscuity malt flavor, becomes earthy, spicy, dank, hay notes, mildly bitter lingering finish. A bit lighter bodied than I would expect from a barleywine. Not terribly impressed with this compared to the other beers I’ve enjoyed from HUB.

Pours crazy light for a barley wine - looks like a pale! Very malt-forward for HUB - and with just the right amount of bourbon in the flavor. It’s a bit hot, and is sorely lacking in complexity... but a good effort nonetheless.

On tap at HUB. Colour... just like unfiltered cidre! Nose... prune-like with hints of soy sauce and raisins. Palate... Bourbon up front with brown sugar, molasses, sappy oak, vanillin and a lengthy shot of prune juice on the finish.

Tap. Dark brown, thin tan head. Aroma is sweet malts; flavor is sweet malt with caramel, light hop, fruitiness, bourbon, alcohol is there too.

Draught @ brewpub. I was pretty disappointed in this beer after tasting the magnificient Secession, which I’d hope would be a smaller version of this barley wine. It is not quite the case. Here’s we’re facing a very cloudy, dark auburn ale under a fair off-white crown that barely covers it. The nose is one-dimensional to say the least with its oatmeal/maple syrup components that dominate. Even for a barley wine, this is very sweet indeed, striking the palate with its corny bourbony alcohol that does not leave much room for anything else. The claimed 90 IBUs never really come through to sweet some of the agressive sweetness away. very sugary + very corny barrel = unrefined bourbon BW.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2010 on tap at brouwer’s for hard liver 2010. light orange color that is slightly hoppy in the nose. smooth palate.
