3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (7589) - Woodland, California, USA - FEB 26, 2011
Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a 3 finger creamy tan head. The aroma is hop. Seems rather resin. Med plus body. Flavor is some sweet charred caramel with pine/citrus/floral/godonlyknows hop. It’s very bitter. Much more charred than other BIPAs. I can imagine a touch of coffee. The nose is great. The taste is great. It has much more oomph than 6.5% would suggest. A really great ale.

A Cascadian Dark Ale...wait, no, an IBA thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a deep brown body and a tan head. Aroma of hops, citrus, alcohol, pine, and light dark roast. Taste is spicy, hoppy, bitter and pine. Creamy mouthfeel, light carbonation.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 3fourths (6407) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 23, 2011
draft. deep brown with cola colored edges and a tan head. up front it’s licorice astringent black patent and roast with cheesecloth yeast / hop character... so it has the bitterness of the roasts grains with an oily soy sauce flavor, and a terribly thinning and acidic / fizzy texture. weak malt structre throughout, and lacks pretty much any aromatic hop character
expected in IPA.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sammy (6125) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 5, 2011
Somewhat diapointing for the style, as a beer. Fresh bottle from Zyn in Calgary. Black body, high IBU, more roastiness in he flavour. Lacey Lots of really roasty as in burnt parts. Hops and citrus in finish. Lace rings. Grows on me, but I am just OK on it.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Rastacouere (5923) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 15, 2010
Draught @ brewpub. Nice cloudy copper pour covered by a delicate light beige head. A strongly aromatic, very toasty, caramel laden ale with a fun roasty twist that adds a roasted grain side that would fit in a big brown ale. That’s not what we have though, here’s a hop-forward, punchy Portland ale. Strong and perfumey, fresh, citrusy, resinous hops bring plenty of bitterness to balance out the caramel. Very good stuff, whose freshness is deployed on the tongue and provides the most effective cleansing, effective carbonation that makes the whole ensemble very easy-going. Feels much better than the sum of its parts. In one phrase, this is what Lagunitas probably aims for under 40 different labels.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BückDich (5467) - McCall, Idaho, USA - SEP 9, 2010
Bottle: Black color with a light head. The nose is grassy and hoppy with a dry roasted malt note. The flavor shows more roasted malts than hops and it seems a little disconnected. Interesting though, the black IPAs are proving not to be so easy to brew.
