3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Unclear darkest brown, creamy light brown head slowly fades. Pungent citrus grassy hops and smokey roasty malty aroma. Big bold bitter hop and burnt dark malt taste, some coffee and caramel. Average carbonation, full bodied, heavily hopped makes this brew DNFL (Definately Not For Lagerboys)

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Poured a very dark brown tending toward black with big foamy tan head. The nose is citrus and floral hops, Medium to full in body with a resin mouthfeel. The flavor is well roasted malts with a big hop set of flavors including pine, citrus, and flowers. There is a nice bitterness that carries over into the finish. To me this sort of defines what a black IPA should do with a great balance between the roasted malts and hops. Very nice.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Hayduke. We enjoyed a bottle together via facebook chat. This beer was cola appearing. Clear dark red brown. A big beige head never faded completely and left blotches of lacing. A nose that is full of roasted malts and citrus hops. This is a style that I have not enjoyed in the past due to the black licorice that all of them seem to favor. This one avoids that. It offered roasted and chocolate malt which were both nice. Citrus hops had nice bitterness and some back end fruit. Definitely an improvement over other black IPAs.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Into a pint glass. A dark copper color with a thin dirty white head that quickly faded to the edge of the glass.
From a foot away I smelled pine and citrus. Closer up, pine and grapefruit with a mellower undertone of malt.
Total IPA at first, citrus followed by a small roasted malt bomb, ending with a nice bitter. The malt sweetness was faintly present throughout.
Light to medium body with a light but assertive carbonation.
Outstanding CDA with almost perfect balance of maltiness and hops.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver
Black color, with medium sized beige head. Very nice aroma of coffee, some roasted malt, light dust and hops. Good body structure, dark chocolate and coffee flavor, quite dry mouthfeel, with a strong bitterness; it ends with loads of roasted malts, and hidden hop resins, but never ashy. Very good.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Roasted malt aroma - dark chocolate, espresso and piney hops. Medium bodied, roasted characteristics, medium hop finish. Finish is lingering bitter with a touch if lemon. This is a good beer, but I’ve had better stylistically, and a style I’m growing quite fond of.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Originally reviewed: 3/2/10. Poured into a pint glass. Pours a limitless black. No light gets through. A gorgeous tan head caps it off like the top of a milkshake. Excellent retention; leaves lots of sticky lace and webbing. This is a really pretty beer. Big powerful pine resin scents burst out to the nose. Citrus zest and some grass in there as well. Great smooth and creamy body. This one sits a little heavy. Very bitter at the onset with lots of hop presence. Sharp burnt toast on the backend. A little charring. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. Great beer!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample at the Tap House Grill in Seattle. Pours reddish-brownish-black with a medium fluffy light beige head that diminishes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of sweet roasted malt and resiny hops. The finish is piney hops up front and leaves a sweet malty aftertaste. Decent overall.
