3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear, dark red with a smallish, firm and beige head. Lots of Xmas spices in the nose, with dark fruit, berries, and roasted malt. Flavor is strongly smoky, anise-spicy, slightly burned-ashy, sweetish and berryish. Flavor is quite different from the aroma. Indeed a different Xmas brew, but quite good in its own way. The burned smokiness was a bit too much for me, though.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
It’s unclear, dark, red mahogany with a creamy head. Sometimes IMO anise is a killer in beer, especially when it gives me associations to rubber in both aroma and flavor. I do however also find notes of caramel, berries and light smoke in the aroma. The flavor has a light sweetness and notes of spice, caramel, dry citrus, fruit, berries, light smoke, cinnamon and again the anise/rubber before the dry finish.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 18, 2009 06-NOV-2009, bottle @home.
Very hazy brown with light brown head.
Nose of dust, oranges, spices, smoke.
Taste is dust, meat (!), smoke. Well, there are malt notes as well, it is after all belgian inspired. But what is that funny dusty, smokey note?
I guess it is the hops? Is it dry hoped? If so not very well integrated. It does taste like hop pellets. Very strange. Is the bottle sick?
After a while I can find lots of interesting stuff underneath the dust/smoke. I find dried fruit. Actually it is quite fruity underneath. BUT still!
I am a big Hornbeer fan, but this is wrong:-(
16-NOV-2009, bottle @DØE møde, Vanløse.
I had forgotten that I had already tasted and rated this. It is only when I find the brew here at Ratebeer that I remember.
The nose is very berry-like with vanilla and spice.
Very smokey taste - I never noticed that in the aroma!
I can see from my previous rating that it was there as well back then.
New rating is 7-4-6-3-15=35, but since the two ratings are so close i have not changed the original rating.
