2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Rastacouere (6058) - Montreal, Quebec, - MAY 28, 2012A small tan froth settles above the deepest brown hue and diminishes to nothing within a minute or two. We’re left with a malt monster, throwing liquorice and sugary molasses notes amidst a rather cold filter coffee roasted malt foundation that is not especially attractive. Sweet indeed, it even proposes vanilla/cocoa notes that would fit a bourbon barrel ale, maintaining its carbonation level on the low side and that accentuates the alcohol feel and thus the sweetness further, most of the bitterness seemingly coming from the roast. Rather loose malts and nowhere near decadent for an almost 9% strong dark ale. I have appreciated a lot of the Hornbeer stuff and particularly they black ales, so while a relatively good beer, it feels below what I have come to expect from them.

Pitch black, very meagre head. Liquorice, coffee, caramel. Very sweet initially, mild bitterness arises towards the end. Smokiness dominates, which balances the sweetness.

Lots of roasted malty notes hints of earthy hops. Taste is sweet with plums and raisins, bitter from dark roasted malts, coffee and caramel. Palette could be more developed.

Medium body strength; flavor of roasted malts and dark caramel, quite dry, with relatively strong bitterness and some cardboard and glue. The final is lightly spicy. Nothing exciting.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Turboninja (38) - Tampere, FINLAND - FEB 17, 2013
Aroma brings more expectations, than can be found on taste and palate: alcohol comes trough a bit too much even this is not so strong stuff. Otherwise a very good porter: Not too roasted, clear and malty taste with wide taste spectrum.
