muzzlehatch (4422), Burlington, Vermont, USA Apr 8, 2006 22 oz bottle purchased at City Market, Burlington, 4/8/06, sampled from a Corsendonk glass at cellar temperature. Looks great: muddy/hazy very dark brown with thick lasting creamy tan head....the aroma, less impressive but still not half bad: fairly typical roasty/sweet cocoa aroma, caramel, molasses, perhaps a bit of cheddar—dissapointingly, somewhat low strength, and as it warms an ominous grapy quality intrudes.....and disfigures the flavor profile terribly, sweet, rather winey/lactic taste, this is too old and somewhat soured, moderate to high carbonation, a bit of nice roasty character does enter at the finish but doesn’t save it....palate too thin, with very little malt presence, somewhat syrupy, soda-like. Frustrating because there is some little quality here, I thought for a moment these guys were on track, but this ends up not much better than their first two, and it’s incomprehensible to me how a soured, old beer like this could make a first appearance on shelves in this condition. Well at least it looked pretty.
