Probably not the most appetizing name for a beer but it is drinkable. Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a small white head, just don’t smell it. I am not sure I can even identify that odor but it isn’t pleasant. Maybe a little skunky. Light bitterness and body.

Pours an almost clear, straw orange with a smallish white head. A little bit skunky aroma, just a flutter of some malt character but not much. Overall, not an appealing smell. Kind of grainy with some corn. The taste is very bland. alot of grain, some skunk, just the most mild little swetness to it at the end, but nothing that makes you want to come back for more. Also get just a flutter of some hop character. The aftertaste is dry and lifeless. Not absolutely terrible, definitely drinkable if there’s nothing else. Fun to try because of the name.

Clear, very pale gold pour. Were it not for the thin ring of white bubbles that quickly disperse to the edge of the glass, I’d think it resembled an ice cider. Of course, that also puts it in the general color spectrum of a garbage pale lager, so the appearance rating, for me, is pretty much neutral. Light DMS notes cloud an otherwise not-too-shabby aroma, considering the source. Notes of grain, earth and a touch of hops make up the bulk of the aroma. there are some lemon and astringent furniture cleaner scents too. Not awful, by any stretch. Flavor is much the same. I’m surprised to find that this is unmistakeably a Dortmunder, with flaws that are not overwhelming and off-putting. Bitterness is light to mild, acidity light and sweetness light-medium but very controlled. Decent balance, though nothing is exciting other than the fact this doesn’t taste nearly as bad as the ridiculous name indicated it might. The mouthfeel is spicy, nicely carbonated and a touch sticky, light bodied and vibrant. Finishes lightly hoppy and grainy, short duration. This is not nearly as bad as it’s ratings indicate.

Poured from a 12oz bottle with a pale, watery gold with a dissapearing head, this decent helles is better than some of these revieiwers are giving it credit for. As thin as it is, it’s got more character and flavor than any light macro lager. I don’ know if I’d go so far as to agree with the bottle’s proclaimation as "Kentucky’s Finest" but I’ve had a lot of true piss-like offerings from Miller and Budweiser, and reviewers who rated this lower than Miller LIte or Bud Light are full of horse shit. Oh, the HPB website talks about money from the sale of this goes toward retired jockeys, hence the funny but distasteful name.

This beer isn’t really all that bad. Probably better than most macros. I think people think they are supposed to give it a horrible rating just because of the name. Pours a light slightly hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is wheat, corn, barley and light hops. Flavor is sweetened corn and grains, mild malts, and touches of citrus. Hell, I would drink a couple more of these if I had some.

The Dan Journal #52. Tasted 12/11/06. 12oz bottle. Hazy, yep, pissy. Nothing. Ever so slight nuances of lively citrus. Mildly zesty. Not really even worth the cheeky name.
