3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3388) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 8, 2012
My wife brought this one back from a trip to Rochester. Not a style I care for generally but this was decent. The aroma was floral hops, chocolate syrup and vanilla. The flavor was bitter and had a somewhat rough floral hop presence with notes of roasty malts, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, anise and wood. The finish was long roasty and woody with lingering cocoa and vanilla. Fairly full bodied. Solid.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackIPA (331) - Rochester, New York, USA - SEP 11, 2011
22oz bomber for $5.49 from Beers of the World. Wowza! This beer is impressive. Pours black as night with a light brown head. Citrus hops and roasty malts in the nose. Leaves lacing on the glass. The flavors get more apparent as it warms... pine needles, flower petals, chocolate, roasted nuts...it’s all in there. Citrusy. Medium mouthfeel... not too thick or thin. Overall an excellent beer and an excellent value. This is my first beer from Horseheads Brewing, and I didn’t know what to expect. Could this be the new standard for Black IPA’s? I certainly think it has the potential... I would say this beer is equal to Stone’s SSRA in every way. Excellent. Outstanding.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 williamherbert (1064) - Syracuse, New York, USA - AUG 5, 2011
Woody oaky hop aroma, over a malt of coffee grounds. Both aromas are very pronounced. A little dusty.
The appearance is a deep, dark brown ... almost black. Good retention of a half-finger of light brown head.
The flavor is dusty burnt cookie malt. Oak, pine oil and grapefruit. Ashy tobacco finish. Oily and dusty; the balance of the harsh flavors.
The palate is chunky, akin to a stout. Overall, it’s a good example of style. Really well-balanced.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ron (1697) - Rochester, New York, USA - MAR 27, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Poured a dense dark color with a slight head. Good citurs aroma. Medium-bodied with a big hoppy flavor and medium bitterness. A full mouthfeel. Slight citrus character matched to an underlying roasted malt flavor.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SHIG (2707) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - MAR 15, 2011
Tap at the brewery: Poured a deep black with reddish highlights. The head is nice beige head. The aroma was nice citrus hops and some undertones of malt. Taste was warming roasted malts that gave way to that IPA citrus hops bitter that my tongue urges for in this style. Very impressive beer for this small micro.
