June 14, 2013 - on draught at Volo. Cloudy, nearly opaque reddish-black, with a small but lasting creamy beige head. Aroma is light roast, with cream and mint, hint of latex paint. Taste follows, some milky mineral character, light grassy bitterness - minimal alcohol, very subtle, quite appealing (8-). Slick, silky mouthfeel - on the palate it seems more like chocolate milk than beer - airy and frothy, quick finish - some mineral bitterness (cocoa) emerges in the aftertaste - I loved it, can’t quite say why.

[5385-20130525] Tap. Chocolate-covered coffee beans aroma. Clear, deep dark red body with a quick foamy off-white head. Bitter roasted malt flavour has a lingering coffee bark aftertaste. Full body. Good. (7/4/7/4/15) 3.7

On tap at Barvolo. Pours a deep, dark amber with a coating of off white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma has notes of licorice, chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste is balanced with some smooth caramel, chocolate, and roasted notes. Medium body and carbonation. Clean in the mouth. Overall a nice brew. Smooth caramel and roasted notes. Yum!

Spab (3440) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 23, 2014
On tap at Volo. Pours a orangey dark brown with average-sized light tan head. Aroma is caramel, nuts and modest hops. Flavour is nutty, malty and has a solid hop presence. Mellow bitterness in finish. Pretty much what an American brown should be.

pushkinwow (2628) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 2, 2014
On tap at Volo. Listed at 5.3%. Nice brown pour with a semi-creamy head. Strong walnut and peanut husk aroma along with some roasted malt. Moderate carbonation and body, somewhat bitter, tasty for a brown and easy to drink

Draught at Volo. Pours a very dark amber-brown with a small lasting frothy beige head. Mild aroma of coffee & chocolate, some mild sugary sweetness and light leafy hops. Flavour is unexpected, in a good way, it’s lactic along with coffee & chocolate and some leafy hops. Average to medium bodied. This is an interesting, and really good Brown Ale.

Draught at Volo. Big bubbly head. Strangely big. Really weird looking. Disappeared almost immediately. The only discernible aroma is of unripe homebrew. The flavour is better, however, although not immediately recognizable as a brown. It is certainly more traditional than American in style. Or maybe not. There is a lot going on, but none of it is particularly happy. Chocolate, nuts, some sweetish fruit , something floral. Not much bitterness. Quite drinkable. A little thin. More bitterness as it warms.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2013 2013-06-14. Quick notes. Tons of coffee like roast, less astringent and tangy than the previous sample. Smooth soft body is cask like. Still not to my taste, but better impression that my previous sample of it. +1 overall. On tap at Volo, Toronto

2013-05-25. Crisp dark brown body with lovely ruby tinges in the light and a modest tan head. 4+ Aroma of dry malt, light roast. Flavour is quite dry up front, toasty lightly roasty malt, moderate bitterness throughout, very light astringency. Feels just a touch over attenuated - needs some more of the malt sweetness to come out to balance it out. At least for my tastes. Average bodied palate, light carbonation. Not really a fan. On tap at Volo, Toronto

Really good initial coffee aroma. Pours with a thick foamy head, lots of lacing with dark brown colour. Aroma has plenty of roast malt, a touch of hops. Finishes with equal parts of light sourness and bitterness. Average carbonation, consistency a little thicker than average. On tap at brewpub.

Deep brown pour with a great frothy white head and cleaning lace. Roasted malt, caramel aroma. Chocolate malt flavor with caramel background. Slight oily texture. Delicious brown ale. Just the job.
