June 24, 2011 - House Ales Launch event at Volo: draught. Dark red, mostly clear, nearly opaque, minimal head fizzy tan head (3-). Smells pretty good - cocoa, anise, plenty of resinous hops, a bit boozy .... taste follows, definite Belgian yeast, candi sugar, less cocoa - not as dark, fruity or bitter as in the aroma - more licorice and even a bit of green oak resin. Slick mouthfeel, somewhat light of body and carbonation, nice anise and somewhat herbal bitterness in the finish. Iím not sure itís "to style" but who cares, it was tasty and thatís what matters.

[3776-20110624] Tap. Fruity roast notes in the aroma with an odd floral cleaner twang. Hazy, dark red-brown body with a quick foamy head. Strong roasty floral notes continues in the flavour. Medium-full body. Odd lingering aftertaste; just wasnít a huge fan like the others seem to be. (7/3/6/3/14) 3.3

Draught at House Ales Launch Party, Volo. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a spare to no head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, some molasses and light leafy hops. Flavour of chocolate, coffee, molasses and some light alcohol in the finish -- a touch watery but hardly worth mentioning. Average to medium bodied. Iím not really getting the Belgian yeast in this (except for some of the sweetness), it reminds me more of a Stout, but either way itís very good.

The beer was handed to me with no head, but a glowing amber brown that hid somewhere in between black and ruby. Aroma is warming with notes of brown sugar, vanilla, cocoa, hazelnuts, prunes, more dried fruit and cocoa. On the palate is was silky and drinkable showing depth and complexity especially as it warmed. A smooth malt sensation echoes the aroma with cocoa, dark fruits and some caramel and molasses notes. An inch of roast dried it out at the end and really rounds out the beer.

Deep amber brown pour with a lightly fruity aroma. Spicy yeast and a little bit of plum and fig fruitiness. There is also a light rummy molasses-like character. A little bit of treacle. Very Maudite or Trois-Pistoles like with more dark malt om the back of the palate. Toasty and a little bit earthy as well with some crisp caramelly sweetness. Itís more Belgian strong than dubbel, but itís got a lovely yeast expression.

2011-06-24. Black body is near headless. 3+ Flavour is interesting, very smooth subtle sweet dark malt base, light notes of cocoa and orange peeled as billed on the sign. The combination of flavours is very interesting, resulting in a not quite herbal impression. 8+ Sweet aroma, sort of dusty sweet alt, light fruit-yeast, whisper of coconut if I seek it out. 7+ Smooth average body is very lightly carbonated, and could use just a bit more weight and carbonation to it. Rather nice. Overall impression is closer to a sweet stout than a double aside from the fruitiness of the yeast. Rather nice. House Ales Launch Party, Volo, Toronto

I was surprised there was no head on this beer - but the color was really pretty - kind of a dark auburn brown breaking into dark chocolate. The nose was smooth and warming with malt, smooth roast, a big of caramel and a nutty cocoa. The flavor was slick and delicious when the beer warmed a bit - nutty with chocolate, dark malt, maybe a touch of toffee... Super cool... I bet if the coconut came out more it would be even nicer!

Aroma soft malts , mild , bit of sugars sweetens , soft aromatic esters and phenolic hints Ė caramel with Arabic Gum , cherry- wood and alcohol.7+
Appearance minimal top, dark brown with low carbonation , no lace.2+
Flavor and Palate : Medium bodied. Smooth ,clean , slight roast burn that added to depth of this ale. Smooth oil textured palate with darker malts. Notes of bitterness show as it warms up. Slight nutty overtones added late. Slight dryness of alcohol at finish. Good overall balance and play.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2011 House Ales Fest at Volo. Better as it warms. Initially water and chocolate, with chocolate aroma. No head, black chocolate colour. Middling mouthfee as it warmed, winey richer flavour. Good drinkability. Seemed a little boozier than recorded a.b.v. Liked this the most of the half dozen I had.
