Cask@Loughborough Beer Festival 2007. Black beer with a light head. The aroma is lightly roasted and the flavour is watery and roasted. Overall a plainish beer.

Bottled (thanks GarethYoung!). Dark rubyish brown colour, small brown head. Aroma is strongly roasted malts along with some hops and coffeeish notes. Flavour is roasted malts, rather dry bitterness and some hints of coffee and chocolate. Aftertaste is smoking wet wood. Quite watery palate, but otherwise a very nice one.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 ALLOVATE (2142) - Butler, AUSTRALIA - AUG 9, 2006
Cask, handpump @ the Rook & Gaskill Inn, York, Nth Yorkshire.
Shimmering, deep ruby brown with a tight, creamy tan head that showed good retention and solid lacing. Simple aroma of cracked, roasted coffee beans and black patent malt. Comes alive in the mouth though. Feint touch of aniseed, butterscotch and cherries compliments its otherwise dry, smoky and bitter chocolate palate. Powdery and silky on the tongue, not overly full in body but well rounded. Aftertaste is an extension of the flavours in the mouth with dry, smoky malts drawing out the saliva to make it a refreshing number. I liked it, it’s not complex but it is well crafted and balanced to perfection. Quite nice!!!

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2006 Sweet, but not much, a little strong, and not much body but not as much as other Stouts on Cask. Black, and not much foam, but it is nice after all. Earlier Rating: 11/11/2005 Total Score: 4 Really found the foam a little Ale alike, but the colour was nice, it was like roasted grains but also a little sweet. Earlier Rating: 11/9/2005 Total Score: 4 I found there was a bottle version thanks to Dave, but I really liked more the one on cask, it is sweeter.

Aroma is generally stouty, coffee, not that complex but good. Taste is similar though not much going on for a stout. A bit uncomplicated.

Gravity cask at Maidstone BF. Black colour with thin dark beige head. Coffee/choc flavours but a bit grainy. Not too acidic with good balance. The best dark beer I had at this festival
