COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Formerly known as "Hövels Original Bitterbier". Nowadays sold Germany-wide with the additive "Feinherbes Rotgold".

average frothy white head. good lacing. mostly diminishing. clear thick dark amber body. aroma: light hoppy, honey, metal and alcohol. if: moderate sweet. ff: heavy sweet light bitter; long duration. palate: light medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, metallic finish. Dulçor de mel. Amargor metalizado. Lembra bohemian pilsener. 6 s

Alengrin (1350) - BELGIUM - AUG 20, 2014
Tasted as Hövels Original Bitterbier, its former name. A kind of self-contained amber beer from Dortmund, top-fermented, since 1893. Wheat malts are used here. Irregular, creamy, yellowish white, stable head, deep and clear amber colour. Aroma of pale malts, caramel, some wheats, slightly woody and smoky accents, apricot, flowery hops. Soft malty taste, lightly sweetish, bit wheaty, bit metallic, then drying out and becoming a bit woody, with dry but only mildly bitterish finish - needless to say, I had expected more bitter in view of its name, so it is not a bad thing they left out the "Bitterbier" meanwhile. Separate from the German standards, though the Düsseldorf Alts seem to bear a certain resemblance to this (if you do need to have a clue style-wise), or at least some of them.

Nice amber beer. I experienced a bit more after having poured it into the glass. Malty. Not bitter although that was its former name. A beer of which you can drink many in a row.

Deep pearl white tall head. Clear amber-copper body. Hops, yeast and caramel to the nose. Bread, dark caramel, hops, dough and fruits to the tongue. Easy going on palate. Finishes to fruity breads and dark sweet bread. Nice enough. [50 cl. green special swingtop btl. 5.5%abv. BB28.1.15]

Countbeer (4397) - Best of E-Town mit ein Brauhaus, NETHERLANDS - JUL 30, 2014
Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Medium sized off white foamy head on top of a clear amber colored beer. Aromas of malts, some iron, grain and oat tints, some sweet malts... Flavour is malty, bitter, sweaty, some caramel and some herbs... Meh... Aftertaste is strange bitter and malty with a herbal edge. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, medium unbalanced body and a light creamy texture. Quite unbalanced with a strange bitterness.
