COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Formerly known as "Hövels Original Bitterbier". Nowadays sold Germany-wide with the additive "Feinherbes Rotgold".

500ml bottle served in a Weizen glass. A: Pours the traditional Altbier copper color. Clear. Forms a medium and fluffy white head. Low retention but lots of thin and lingering lacings left in the glass. Thin bubbles can be seen coming from the bottom of the glass. A thin layer remains for a long time on the top S: Strong toffee and caramel malts in the nose. Sweet and biscuity. Some notes of grapes and flowery hops T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of toffee and caramel malts. Altbiers are most probably one of the most fruity Lagers on earth. Good notes of grapes and raisins. Good and mild bitter end. Balanced M: Light but bit molasses body. Medium carbonation. Caramel and biscuity aftertaste O: Good drinkability. Classic German Alterbier. Pleasant and recommended [ BA Review @ 6/2/2014 ]

Barwa ciemnoczerwona przechodząca wręcz w karmazyn, klarowne. Piana bardzo obfita, średnio- i grubopęcherzykowa, nietrwała. Lacing przyzwoity.

Reddish and clear ale with many nice and clear bitternotes in the taste, despite an anonymous aroma. My first association is "IPA in German", but the overall taste is a bit too mild for this label to be appropriate. Rather, this should be described as a spicy altbier - better hopped than any other traditional German beer I have tasted.

Bottle, bbd 3.2014. Thank you Excellent Little Brother for the delivery! Clear brown with white head. Malty aroma, some instant coffee with milk and a little wood. Tastes slightly bitter, malty, a little burnt caramel. Medium body, fairly carbonated and a little burnt aftertaste. Despite the age, not bad.

Flasche. - Rotgold, klar; kurzlebiger beigefarbener Schaum.

average frothy white head. good lacing. mostly diminishing. clear thick dark amber body. aroma: light hoppy, honey, metal and alcohol. if: moderate sweet. ff: heavy sweet light bitter; long duration. palate: light medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, metallic finish. Dulçor de mel. Amargor metalizado. Lembra bohemian pilsener. 6 s

Tasted as Hövels Original Bitterbier, its former name. A kind of self-contained amber beer from Dortmund, top-fermented, since 1893. Wheat malts are used here. Irregular, creamy, yellowish white, stable head, deep and clear amber colour. Aroma of pale malts, caramel, some wheats, slightly woody and smoky accents, apricot, flowery hops. Soft malty taste, lightly sweetish, bit wheaty, bit metallic, then drying out and becoming a bit woody, with dry but only mildly bitterish finish - needless to say, I had expected more bitter in view of its name, so it is not a bad thing they left out the "Bitterbier" meanwhile. Separate from the German standards, though the Düsseldorf Alts seem to bear a certain resemblance to this (if you do need to have a clue style-wise), or at least some of them.
