Sampled at GBBF 2013, London - Day 2. Pours clear brown with a light, frothy head. Nose of dark brown bread with touches of rubber and chocolate. Medium sweet flavor with toasted brown bread and mild dark fruits. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Simple finish of toasted malts, brown bread and restrained cocoa. Alright overall.

(Cask, GBBF 2013): Dark brown in colour, tiny head. Aroma smelt like a cardboard box, wasn’t impressed by that all. The taste redeemed it somewhat with some nice liquorice and coffee flavours. Yet, the aftertaste was cardboard or something similar. Odd one, maybe it was just off.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at GBBF 2013. Brownish in colour, not much head. Quite an unusual one this, malty with toffee and caramel. Some bread. Not too much hoppiness. More of a strong ale or an old ale than a modern day porter maybe. Felt a bit anaemic for 6%.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2010. Cask, gravity dispense. Opaque black ruby in colour with a creamy buff head. Strong roast grain notes long in intensity in the rich aroma. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a rich, moist fruit loaf flavour with black grape and black cherry evident. There is a sweet citric note of blood oranges in this as well. Hops are hard to detect in the brief aftertaste but there is a earthy note present in there. Roast malt comes in again at the warming alcoholic finish with prunes and sweet molasses evident. Never got the rum though! This is a strong Old Ale in style surely. Worth seeking out in cask and highly recommended.

Cask, gravity, at The Pig ’n’ Falcon, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, in the Pig’s Winter Festival ’11. Very dark brown, near black. Thick heavy black toffee aroma with some of the plastic wrapper left on. Sweet, thick malt taste with some bitterness. I thought this was a bit overdone, and that plastic hint gradually became overwhelming.
