CDAs are also known as black IPAs. This version adds deep roasted malts to alter the hue and slightly smooth the edges

Bottle 100 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours a hazy orangey brown with a beige head. Vanilla and subtle roast in the nose. Medium body, subtle unclean roast, some vanilla with a bitter finish. Lacks crispiness - sort of a Stout with extra hops which is not my idea of a Black IPA. 250213

2013-02-24, bottle from Central City Liquors, Surrey, 6-4-7-4-13=34
Dark brown color with medium sized compact head. Aroma of dark caramel, with some roasted malt, and dirty water. The body is lean, the mouthfeel is quite dry, with strong flavor of roasted malts, some dusty feeling, strong bitterness, enough hop resins.
Hard brew, I enjoyed it more on draught.

2012-12-31, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 6-4-8-4-14=36
Black color, with brown hue; small creamy head. The aroma of roasted malt is quite dusty too. Lean mouthfeel; roasted malt flavor, very good, not excessive, yet dry, with some nice black coffee, and vibrant hopping, bitter and partially resiny. Long final.
Very good.

1L swingtop bottle pours a deep amber color with a 2 and a half finger of off-white head that settles quite quickly and reveals some nice lacing rings. Aroma is citrusy with some roasted grains and caramel. Taste is caramel malty sweetness with some roasted grain and citrusy bitterness. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation leaving a nice tingle on the palate. This one is right up there with the best CDA’s that I have sampled to date.

Single bottle purchased from Signature Liqour Store in Kelowna, BC on 06/28/2012. Colour: Deep dark brown with traces of red and low creamy light brown head. Nose: Heavily roasted malt wrapped in red liqourice. Dark roast ethiopian coffee beans. Touch of vegetable...like eggplant. Taste: Medium sweet, medium-light bitter, medium sour. There is a sour-soother like sourness throughout. The roasted malt is ever-present and again lingering coffee on the finish. Just couldn’t find balance here as hard as I tried.

UPDATED: JAN 28, 2013 Pours dark brown with a nice airy cap. Light lacing. Smells of roasted nut, vanilla, citrusy hops. Taste is coffee, soy, leafy, and gentle hops. While this is a re-tasting, this CDA is still weak. Not much memorable palate.

Some chocolate and roasty character complement the floral and citrus hop aroma. Opaque dark brown body is topped by a generous and long lasting, frothy, tan-brown head that coats the sides of the glass with lacing. Dry roasty flavour with plenty of dark fruit and some chocolate and berries. Moderate bitterness. Medium full body with lovely soft bubbled carbonation and expansive bubbles that feels great in the mouth. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Liberty on Commercial in June 2012.

Dark chocolate brown, foamy light brown head settles and lingers. Dark roasted nutty malt aroma with some faint piney hops. Sweet dark roasted malty taste up front, closely followed up with a piney/ floral/ citrus bitter hop finish. Average carbonation, medium bodied, moderately hopped. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

In bottle; aroma of hops and malts. Taste was quite bitter yet hoppy ... didn’t realize this is a black IPA as i do not like IPA’s at all. Overall, three of us tried it and three people were not fans. Too bad as Howe Sound has some good beers.
