Howler to goblet Licorice, molasses, maybe nutmeg. Deep reddish brown with a bubbly brown head. Taste is sour with black licorice. Nice full bodied with a nice bite at the end.

Deep dark brown, pretty much black in colour. Frothy head that is a light brown colour. Aroma of liquorice. Taste of liquorice and nuts with a sweet and bitter taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Woah now! What a name! I love it. Jet black pour. Hints of anise, sugar, booze, roast, and caramel on the nose. Flavors are strong in the thick molasses department, singing on anise and alcohol. Hints of cocoa in there somewhere as well. While it’s not all blended perfectly, it’s loud and smooth enough to where my palate found this apparently much more appealing than a lot of raters out there. YuM!

Barreras (948) - Diamond Bar, California, USA - JUL 5, 2014
Pours a deep black color with a dark beige foam. Aroma is distinctly black licorice and dark malt, a little skunky. Taste is full of dark nuts, licorice, and imperial malts. A heavy mouthful beer that doesn’t make any excuses or tries to hide its alcohol content. A hint of dark chocolate in this beer that packs a punch with every swallow leaving a tolerable bitter aftertaste.

Aroma is dominated by black licorice and some rich sweet maltiness. Taste is a nice rich sweet rich profile with licorice, caramel and slight smokiness. Finishes with a slight bitterness. Mostly licorice and sweet malt here. Appearance is a dark amber / black with a beige / pearl head that retains fairly well.

From a 12 oz bottle at the Beer Head BBQ in Falls Church VA. Pours a clear dark cola with a tan head. Licorice nose. Flavors of chocolate. Bitter roasted finish.

You can smell the licorice, coca, chocolate, the appearance is dark brown, you can see light through the glass, very light head, the taste is a huge disappointment! You taste licorice and spices, but brown sugar and molasses are almost non-existent! There is almost no sweetness to it and in fact this is a salty beer!

Black pour with a tan head. Aroma is heavily roasted malts, molasses, and licorice, licorice, licorice. Flavor is big black licorice. It just overwhelms anything else this beer might have going on. Very unbalanced.

Dark brown. Big liquorice aroma, anise...dame on the palate...it’s a strong, slightly oily impy with lots of rich malts and a huge anisey blast, bit of booze. Not all that refined but I don’t think that’s the point.

On tap at Barley Brothers, Winnipeg. Black pour with an attractive mocha head. Aroma of black liquorice and allspice. More liquorice in the nose than the flavour though, which is nice. I don't mind black liquorice, so I found the flavour to be nicely balanced with caramel and chocolate notes, especially at first. Eventually the liquorice takes over a bit. Nice full-bodied flavour though - a little boozy, a little dry. Completely unique and definitely some good things going.

Anise on the aroma, and coffee and malt in the background. Very deep and rich color in the glass, with a forward coffee palate and rich chocolate malts. The licorice is a fine-tuned accent on the beer, sped along by the high gravity. Short palate for an imperial stout, but great flavors, very friendly to the palate.
