Howler to goblet Licorice, molasses, maybe nutmeg. Deep reddish brown with a bubbly brown head. Taste is sour with black licorice. Nice full bodied with a nice bite at the end.

Bottle - 1L swing-top. Black pour with a thick, dense, tall brown head. Licorice, roasted malt, bittersweet dark chocolate and molasses int he nose. Taste is big black licorice notes, roasted malt, dark chocolate, molasses and burnt caramel. Body is medium to medium-full with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Sticky as well. Ends with more black licorice, roasted malt, molasses, dark chocolate, burnt caramel and coffee notes.

UPDATED: JUN 20, 2015 I’m a fan of black licorice, so this had potential for me, despite the middling scores. I am always amazed that people spend what they do on a beer, and then put in the review of a chocolate stout "I hate chocolate" or they hate hops yet rate hundreds of IPAs. I was wondering if the lowish scores here reflected a large number of people that just don’t care for black licorice, or something else. Anyway, starts off nice. Big black licorice and roasted malt aroma. Looks great...black with thick brown head. The flavor and feel is where it went south for me. Too over the top in the flavor...almost medicinal in quality and overly bitter. Not bad, but not something very good in more than a taster size...which makes the 32 oz format seem ridiculous. The worst part for me was the anise burn at the back of the mouth and all the down my throat to my belly, that ruined what could have still been a pleasant flavor. Overall, had some good things going for it, but didn’t want to finish.

Bottle. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of licorice, coffee, chocolate, biscuit, toast and salt. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of licorice, coffee and chocolate. Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. Decent but too much licorice for my taste.

Finally will try this got it on tap because I will not pay that obscene price for that big bottle. Looks black in my glass..... no cap. My Wilbur taste fantastic today. Smells like black liquorice and Guiness. Taste the same...... Some alcohol heat. I do not enjoy black liquorice but this seems to work. It really works....... Dam do I have to go buy a bottle now? Review is shit the beer is good...... not great.

Interesting combo, the licorice is much more pronounced than I would have thought, taste more so than aroma. Pours out like black motor oil, nice fluffy beige head, slick body. Aroma is combo of chocolate licorice and burnt toast. Taste is more robust, tons of anise/licorice. A bit sweet, and lots of lingering burn.

Loved it capped bottle with a swing top pours deep black in color with a massive mocha colored head with great retention eventually settling to some spotted lacing. Aroma is dominated by licorice with some roasted notes. Taste is also licorice dominant with some roasted grains and chocolate underneath. A solid imperial stout, but would be better if the licorice didn’t dominate so much

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Dark fruit and liquorice. Jet black with a thin brown head. Lots of liquorice and nice roast malts. Light bitterness and a long nice finish. Nice.

Huh. This is quite an experiment, and it’s going to be polarizing. Do you like black licorice, especially the slightly salty allsorts candy kind of licorice? Does the idea of one of those being dropped in your beer appeal to you? Because that’s more or less what this is. As a fan of black licorice, this is nice. Strange, but nice. I can see this pairing very well with a bowl of allsorts candy within reach! But I’d be hard pressed to suggest what else you might pair this with.

Strong licorice nose. Mahogany, medium tan head. Licorice on the front and back end. Charcoal at midpalate and beyond. Chewy medium to full body. I like it, but I love licorice and anise. Warning: don’t drink it prior to romancing your partner. Both licorice and beer are libido inhibitors.

Bottle at the March Libertine Bottle Share. Pours a deep brown/black with no head. Aroma is anise through and through. Slight chocolate. Taste is more licorice which you really have to like to enjoy this. Not overwhelming but there in enough capacity to make it a big turn off to me. Probably shouldn’t go further.
