4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours with a nice dark head, can immediately smell the licorice. Has an awesome earthy musty licorice flavour, not too sweet. I could drink this anytime.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
1 L fliptop from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours very dark brown with a pretty dark tan head. Aroma is just anise. Med + body. Flavor is dark malt, treacle, chocolate and pretty much anise. The chocolate is sufficient to balance the anise. Or at least nearly. However, for those who dislike licorice, this would seem to be one to avoid. Iím getting a little burn, and donít know if thatís heat or hop. I think this one would be really interesting after some time in a bourbon barrel.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Rating #986 - February 16, 2014 - 1oz sample from a 1L swingtop, $10.39 CAD at Coop. 10%. Might be my lowest rating for an IS to date. Dark black pour with a weak tan head that caps nicely. Aroma is black sambuca. Black licorice dominates on the palate, and I canít get over it. Really unpleasant.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nearly black in color, brown head. Loads of licorice, anise, roasted malt, ash, asphalt. Pretty much just ok.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A striking beer. Completely black with a beautiful caramel head. The liquorice aroma comes through in the taste as well and I find it complementary to the style. An enjoyable sipping beer, but by the time I was finished drinking it the liquorice may have overpowered me to the point where Iíd had enough.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2014 For my personal taste this isnít fabulous but thatís because I hate black licorise so itís me not the beer. That being said this succeeds in achieving a balanced black Licorise stout and is very unique as Iíve never had anything with quite this flavour profile. Successful if not for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A nice stout. All black licorice. Nice anise aromas and flavors. Dark roasted malt flavors too. I liked this.

1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 2/20
This thing is just a mess. There is no balance whatsoever. So overly boozey and licorice itís nearly impossible to take down. Absolute disgrace to Imperial Stout style. Donít buy this.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a relatively large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of liquorice with sweet malt backbone. Taste is dominated by liquorice with some sweet malt and black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Liquorice is an interesting ingredient but over-dominant in this case. Not sure why they insist in bottling this in 1 litre bottle.

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottled sample. Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin head. Fair head retention. Aroma of intense licorice, mint, bitter hops. The taste is strong licorice, mild toast and chocolate. Thin-medium bodied. Definitely a love or hate kind of beer and, well, I donít love it.
