3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Perfect espresso pour with a mild coffee-roast aroma showing hint of grassy hop, toffee, hay. Taste is complex and full with a lot going on… up front powerful hop dryness - not harsh but flavourful - makes for plenty of lemony fresh roasted espresso tang going on over a decent blanket of toffee, dark fruit and malt sweetness. Palate verges near parching dry but never tips over too far, alcohol is non-existent to palate. No acridity or bullying toughness here, for all the big well-put-together flavours the beer is actually fragile and poised. The elegant lemony hops might be ruined by near term aging, which is kind of a fragile flaw for a RIS - would it just fall apart? Long dry finish is grassy hop and mineral. Though there’s about enough malt body this is certainly a dry Impy, better than the extreme opposite. Enjoyable.

Decent sized medium brown head of dense and creamy bubbles. Leaves a nice thick sheet of lacing as it reduces. Rich and malty aroma with some sweet malts, lactose, dark roasted grains and molasses. Color is a very dark brown boardering on black. Relatively thick and chewey mouthfeel. Lots of sweet malts, roasted grains, burnt toast, molasses, a hunt of anise and some mild coffee late swallow. Mild alcohol presence for a 9% brew. Soft mouthfeel and a pretty clean finish with a hint of oaky tartness and sweet lactose. Nit a bad imperial stout. And comes is a very cool swing top 1 liter bottle. Good times!!

I like the name, the beer is good - just ok for the style (my favorite). Doesn’t live up to the name as it drinks like a small impy by today’s standards. Nice notes of coffee and chocolate and roasted barley with moderate bittering hops. I’d get again maybe in a smaller format, but no need for another big’n.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Aroma is roasty, chocolate and a touch of coffee, pretty simple but nice. Taste is roasty chocolate and coffee as well, some nice bitterness, a hint of vanilla as it warms. Tastes a little light for an imperial stout, but great flavour.
