UPDATED: MAR 20, 2016 Appearance: hazy amber-brown with one finger of light beige head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Aroma: sweet toffee, dark fruits, bready yeast, woody. (8/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate-high bitter, moderate alcohol. (7/10) Palate: full slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, malty warming finish. (3/5) Alcohol definitely present on the tongue but not so much on the nose. Despite its 75 IBU, the bitterness takes a while to become apparent over the sweet toffee. Aggressive, verging on harsh, but not quite. Like drinking a puréed dark fruitcake. Definitely a big boy beer. (15/20)

Sampled from the 2013 batch in a 37.5cl bottle at 10.5% ABV purchased in a bottle shop in Gastown, Vancouver. A hazy copper-brown colour with a beige-white head. Enticing aromas of toffee, prunes and raisins. The taste is extremely , sweet and powerful, with intense flavours of toffee, plums, blackberries, coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate all present. Very pleasant fruity long finish. A really good barley wine.

Poured from a cask at a pub. Very beautiful dark bodied beer with a good amount of head. Very delicious! Coats the pallete and leaves a long lasting taste. Good taste of caramel and has a full body.

375ml bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy brown with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of lots of toffee and caramel and toasted malts, some bitterness from the hops, some dough, and hints of alcohol. Flavor the same, with the malts more prominent and smoother as it warms up. Smoother texture. A solid barley wine.

Aroma is toffee, caramel, rich malts and brown sugar. Taste is a full bodied rich maltiness that has a full mouth feel. Sweet flavors like aroma retained. Appearance is a brown/amber with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well.

Pours a cloudy dark copper-light brown with a small white ring of head and great legs. Aroma is rich maltiness, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and dark dried fruit(mostly prunes and raisins). Flavour is toffee, prunes, rasins, caramel, brown sugar, mild alcohol and a touch of molasses. Really tasty brew, got one more for the cellar.

Bottle from tom10101, thanks! Pours a deep garnet and is topped by a tenacious white rim that doesn’t leave much lacing. Nose is of strong alcohol, brown sugar and slightly hoppy. Taste is lightly sweet and pretty bitter, not too flavorful. Hot alcohol, toffee, caramel and that is about it. Alcohol feels peppery and continues into the finish. It feels like 13-14% for sure. Body is medium, carbonation as well and alcohol burns continuously. Overall this a pretty intense but simple barleywine, I had much higher expectations!
