2012: Absolutely superb old ale/barley wine style ale. Pours dark amber with thick head that slowly dissipates to hefty legs and a creamy ring. Aromas of caramelized sugar, bread dough, dark fruit, hop resin, and herbal notes. Classic English Barley wine flavors, lots of malty goodness, sweet dark fruit, mild hop bitterness through the middle to finish, and lingering burnt sugar, candi sugar, toffee, and bread. Fantastic. Tasted at 58.3F.

2013 vintage. Pours with a really yellow to tan head and sports a darker red to light brown colour. Wow. the aroma is much more hoppy than expected, some caramel and stewed fruit sweetness and some brown sugar. On the palate it is rich, warming with a lots of hoppy bitterness and isnít as sweet as some other barley wines iíve had. It has a real butterscotch flavour. I must say, this is my favorite barley wine to date.

2013 edition at the LCBO with 10.5% ABV. Pours a clean copper colour with a great beige head, thick and creamy, great retention and loads of sticky lace. Oh wow... this is quite smooth. No burning and a nice slick mouthfeel. Aromas of dark fruit, very malty but with some decent hops. Dark fruit flavours with a toffee base and the hop a little stronger in the finish, creating a beautiful grassy bitterness. Quite a delicious barleywine that I would buy more.

This ale poured a medium red colour with a nice, big, tan coloured, foamy head. Scents include ripe fruit, caramel, dough, alcohol and malt. First swig was smooth with a medium sweetness and a low carbonation. Flavours of caramel, ripe fruit, hopps and roasted malts. Finish is slightly bitter with a malty finish.

My continuing education in barley wine continues with this coca-cola-like pour. A slight skin of foam floats atop. Taste is a rich combination of caramel, French Canadian sugar pie, burnt brown sugar, dates & citrus. Alcohol is not on full stealth here, as is evident in the enjoyable slow burn of the after taste. Other barley wines ive sampled have back fired with a hyper Sweetness. This bugger doesnít fall into that trap. Iím a big fan of this.

375 ml bottle from LCBO (very classy), served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Very deep mahogany with a decent tan head. Aroma: Richly malty with plenty of brown sugar, treacle and dark dried fruits, caramel and dark bread crust, quite sweet-smelling, a slight resinous note, a bit of chocolate, a slightly savoury note. Palate: Medium-full body with gentle carbonation. Flav.: Quite rich and malty again, darker than the nose, more brown sugar veering towards molasses, burnt toast, more resinous, dark dried fruits, blood orange?, very big; sweet with good bitterness and a long, richly malty and resinous finish.

Quite nice.

375 mL bottle. (labelled 10.5%.) Dark, clear, chestnut brown with a small brown head. Decent lacing. Nice, slightly sweet aroma has lots of caramel malt notes, some ripe orchard fruit, a little honey, and enough hops that it doesnít smell too sweet. Big, fairly typical barleywine flavour of toasted caramel/slightly burnt brown sugar and booze, but it is well done. Some hops appear near the end to balance the sweetness.

Deep ruddy amber pour with a thick sticky tan head. The nose is awesome - rich earthy malt with a nice caramel character and a bit of soft fruity hop aroma. Plums and dates with an assertive bitterness. Intense but well-balanced with a nice bright hop character. A touch of pine and some herbal character as well. It tastes great now, but would age well too.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a deep hazy reddish brown with a generous tan head that leaves a bit of lace. Nose is sweet malts, vanilla and dark fruits. Taste is much the same with some brown sugar and caramel. Hops appear in the long finish. Body is medium-full and sticky. Alcohol is apparent but not overpowering.
